I saw Black Swan recently and I loved the movie and particularly Natalie Portman’s performance. I knew beforehand that Portman got an Oscar which I think was very well deserved. After the movie I did some research and found out that Mila received a lot of acclaim and even got a Golden Globe nom, which I don’t understand. I felt like her performance was good but so was all the other supporting cast. She really didn’t do anything special or groundbreaking. Maybe she was nominated because it was such a different role from what she usually does, which is comedy? What exactly was so good about her performance?March 29, 2020 at 12:46 pm #1203399628
I wonder the same. She even gets praised on this forum when the one that deserves it is Hershey.
She just got a relevant role in an amazing film in a weak year.March 29, 2020 at 12:47 pm #1203399630
Laura Dern just won an Oscar for a performance that would have won a Guest Actress in a Drama Emmy 20 years ago and you really need it explained to you why a so so performance makes it into awards contention?

I never bought into the hype around Mila Kunis in Black Swan and she was rightfully snubbed at the Oscars.March 29, 2020 at 1:29 pm #1203399683
because she was a rising star with a prominent part, bafta made the right decision (as they often do) nominating hersheyMarch 29, 2020 at 2:28 pm #1203399753
I don’t think she was nom-worthy, but she really was one with the character. She was the most believable/human/realistic character in the movie. All other characters were archetypes.March 29, 2020 at 11:12 pm #1203400494
During that time the media and Kunis’s people I’m sure, were trying to build her up as the next big leading lady and since people loved the movie they liked to believe that everything about it should have been nominated. So Kunis was swept up in the hype for multiple reasons. Luckily the Oscars saw through the hype for once and left her off the list. Kunis is fine in the role but it’s not a meaty role and any young actress could have done what she did.March 30, 2020 at 1:07 pm #1203401641
Yeah, the Kunis hype was fairly baffling at the time and I felt Hershey and even Ryder were more worthy of consideration than her.
However, considering someone brought Laura Dern up, if her performance can WIN an Oscar, I feel like all bets are off at this point.

Laura Dern is a beloved actress who was previously nominated for Oscars before her win. There is no comparison between her and Kunis. Also Dern was better in Marriage Story than Kunis was in Black Swan.March 31, 2020 at 9:20 am #1203402739
This was the best supporting performance this year. It was an excellent performance. She elevated that text.

Kunis was great. if you want undeserved hype, look no further from Frieda Pinto in Slumdog Milionaire. Most boring wooden performance ever. Shame on BAFTA for throwing her a bone. At least Kunis SAG nom had some merit.March 31, 2020 at 11:09 am #1203402975
I think she did a very good Nuance quiet but strong performance in Black Swan I wouldnt mind seen her nominated for an OscarMarch 31, 2020 at 2:12 pm #1203403629

What exactly was so great about Kunis though? She was fine but not really awards worthy. Besides Portman, who deserved her Oscar win, the only other actors in the movie who I thought either deserved more acclaim or even Oscar noms were Cassel, Hershey, and maybe even Ryder. I would give those actors noms before Kunis. She was really just a flirty young woman who was competitive in the mind of Portman’s mind. The fact that you guys think she’s that great is baffling to me. I feel like any actress could have easily done what she did. It was so simple and basic. Not to say her acting was bad but definitely not acclaim-worthy at all. I mean what did Kunis do?March 31, 2020 at 2:27 pm #1203403663
I looooved Kunis in Black Swan. Such a natural, sensual and a bit devilish performance which is exactly what the role required. She and Portman played really well off of one another. I don’t think the movie would have worked as well as it did without Kunis in that role.March 31, 2020 at 3:13 pm #1203403770

@Jays Kunis was good to me but I feel like people really overhyped her performance. She was just a flirty party girl and played a devilish character in Nina’s head. I feel like any pretty actress could have done what she did. She was good just not Oscar-worthy and definitely not worthy of even a Golden Globe nom.
