I’ve always wondered why the 1978 musical ‘Grease’ only got a sole oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Anyway have any thoughts or details why it wasn’t given more love?

Which other categories were you wondering about? I love the movie Grease and there was a summer or two when I would watch it at least once every week or two, but I would only have given it the nod it got, along with one for the title song (especially after Barry Gibb was ignored the previous year for Saturday Night Fever) or You’re the One That I Want. I’m not sure why they were ignored. I would have also looked at costume design for them. But with Grease being a box office smash, the Academy may have thought the movie wasn’t Oscar worthy. But outside of those 2 categories, I don’t know that I would have nominated it.

I would have liked to have seen Stockard Channing nominated as supporting actress. Sure she was too old to play high school as the majority of the cast were, but she was incredible. Much more interesting than Penelope Milford. But overall it’s not much of surprise they looked this beloved film over. It just doesn’t scream Oscar material. The idiotic ending of the flying car didn’t help much I’m sure.

Grease was probably seen as a teen film. Those typically don’t do well at the Oscars. It’s also more of a popcorn movie than an awards show contender. Nevertheless, Stockard Channing was robbed of a nomination (maybe even a win).
