I feel no guilt about “poor Sam Mendes” because he already has an Oscar, like how Peter MacNicol already had an Emmy.

    2010:Tom Hooper 2011:Michel Hazanavicius 2012:Ang Lee 2013:Alfonso Cuarón 2014:Alejandro G. Iñárritu 2015:Alejandro G. Iñárritu 2016:Damien Chazelle 2017:Guillermo del Toro 2018:Alfonso Cuarón 2019:Bong Joon-ho Only one American director won directing in this decade.

Say what you will about the Oscars, but the director lineup in the 2010s in exceptionally diverse.

At least Sam Mendes already has an Oscar for American Beauty.

At least there were no wrong envelopes. Imagine if, say, the announced Sam Mendes and then they said “no, it’s Bong Joon-Ho”?

Moonlight had it and after doing my research i understood that Parasite was on the same place

Olivia Colman also qualifies for this.

I understand that Parasite had ‘more passion’ but where was said passion on other award shows?

    SAG and WGA.

Critics Choice and Globes don’t count as there are no crossover voters.

No women though. Perhaps this next decade will have a woman or two win? Or nominated?

Why was DGA *and* PGA wrong this year? I think the more international Academy membership MAY have pushed Parasite over the edge. DGA and PGA are largely American.

I think/guess that they are considering making a separate category for Best Female Director.

I heard Tom O Neil saying it.

That’ll get as much backlash as the Popular Movie category, if not more

I think it would be a better idea to extend the category to be like best picture.

This topic needs alot of debate if you’re being honest.

Sometimes,I think there should be a separate category for women as there are 2 separate acting categories.

Sometimes,I think the lineup should be increased from 5 to 7-8.

I agree with this. 5 is too low, but I also think 10 is a bit too high. 8 is probably the perfect number for Directing. That way the majority of the Best Picture nominees (plus one or two surprises like Cold War) can get in and there won’t be any major snubs.

Maybe they saw my “Has Best Director become Best Cinematography 2.0” threads on Reddit and Goldderby and decided better.

I just realised this is the first Directing winner without a Cinematography nomination since Scorsese for The Departed.
