Well because it is a period piece. 80s is a period already, and all the clothing was 80s, which can actually be pretty hard to find. Also, the joker costume is pretty iconic. The colors and jacket lapels suggest that he is not only a clown, but also that he’s a joke. Any jacket’s shoulder pads could probably achieve this image, but the costume was used particularly well when Joaquin dances on the stairs and his red shoulder pads create a devil-horns-like image. The costumes weren’t particularly grand, but they were compelling nonetheless.
