What I really hope for is a hit film. I knew the critical would show love, but now they need to focus on the $$$.

The action genre being subverted by using an older woman as the lead will get adults into theaters.

We’re at an 87 now!! Beating If Beale Street Could Talk (86), BlackKklansman (83), First Man (81) and many more. Didn’t expect this.

Screened for SAG the other night, and it looks like Jenelle Riley did the Q&A. Said they went wild for it!!

I think people here are really underestimating the movie. I think it could win SAG.

It sure could. I want first want to see however, how much the cast is cited with critic’s groups who honor ensembles..

I’m pretty certain I’m one of the few people who has seen this film that’s familiar with it’s source material. It’s a kind of legendary British TV series from the 80’s which I remember from the time but recently rewatched. It’s not very good.

Having said that it’s a great premise with great characters and a lot of fun. It would seemingly be ideal for a modern remake. Which is why I found the whole things so thoroughly disappointing.

Quite how you take 6 hours of source material condense it down to just over and 2 and yet fail to have enough plot to fill it I’ve no idea. Whole important sections are done away with in favour of pointless new characters and unnecessary story arcs. The central premise of the whole film (The widows of deceased gangsters take on their last heist) is almost an afterthought. The plot is weirdly both overly complicated and too flimsy at the same time.

A supposed thriller with absolutely no thrills just a bloated all star cast hampered by underwritten characters, a meandering storyline, numerous dead ends, nonsensical plotting, weird pacing and most of all it’s deeply boring. There is one major plot twist that will somewhat shock audiences but obviously I knew it going in so it had limited impact on me. I can’t even remember how it ends.

It’s great to see Viola given the chance to star in a supposed action/thriller and I hope it’s a big hit to encourage this kind of casting in the future but personally I’m confused by all the critical acclaim. Seems like a prime case of Emperor’s New Clothes.

I don’t think my dislike of the production if clouding my judgement when I say it really doesn’t seem like an Oscar movie at all, especially for the actors who are given very little to work with. But the critics seem to disagree so WTF do I know.

Great reviews coming out of the premiere of the London Film Festival, and certainly the performances. This looks like it can likely perform well at the BAFTA’s, if this continues!

Got an opportunity to see this earlier than expected, and it was a stunner! Steve McQueen’s direction is bold, risky and sometimes too sophisticated for it’s own good! One of the best ensemble casts I can remember in a long time. The performances: Viola Davis was unbelievable, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Kaluuya and Brian Tyree Henry knocked it out! No doubt in my mind this movie and cast will be a presence at future awards show’s this season!

With these reviews, I would be stunned if Widows didn’t get nods across the board, and I don’t just mean Baftas.

It’s currently got 94 on RT (54 reviews) and 86 on MC (17 reviews), with heaps of praise for direction, screenplay, editing and acting. Davis looks like a lock, Kaluuya’s at the very least close to being a lock, and Depicki could break through even though her category’s pretty competitive this year.

It’s presumably not an Oscar film in the traditional sense, which probably means it won’t be competitive for a win in too many categories, but it certainly looks like a player.

This, foolio! With the names involved, and if the critical praise continues for the acting and behind the scenes, I can’t stress enough, it will be an awards player. If it shows up and shows out at the box office as well, then that’s it….
