Davis’ BAFTA record matches her Academy record numerically.

There have been no African-American actresses to receive more than 1 BAFTA nomination for Best Actress – Dorothy Dandridge, Claudia McNeil, Diana Ross, Cicely Tyson, Halle Berry and Gabourey Sibide (and now Viola Davis) are the only ones who have ever been nominated (African-British actress Cathy Tyson was also nominated for Mona Lisa). None of them won.

Supporting Actress is similar, with only Octavia Spencer receiving two nominations (The Help and The Shape of Water). Queen Latifah, Mo’Nique, Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis (who now has two nominations in two categories), and Naomie Harris – and then Thandie Newton, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Lupita Nyong’o – all of them have been nominated once for Supporting Actress. Octavia Spencer for The Help, Mo’Nique for Precious, Thandie Newton for Crash and Viola Davis for Fences were all BAFTA winners.

Davis was nominated for The Help.

The Viola Davis nomination for Widows was the most surprising inclusion of the BAFTA nominations. Given the original series from the 1980s is so beloved in the UK and Ann Mitchells performance just craps all over Viola’s inferior performance, I’m baffled where this came nomination came from. Truely bizarre really and a reflection perhaps that the other contenders are considered very weak.

SMH at the haters as per usual, swooping into to drop that BS…. Anyway, congrats to Viola for the BAFTA nomination.

You forgot to mention Jennifer Hudson.
