I  finally saw the film “Room” last night and it was a masterpiece. Not just because of the magnificent acting and the compelling screenply but the brilliant directing by Lenny Abramson It was clear how hard he worked on the visuals from the point of view shots of Jack and the brilliant performances and the symbolism and the editing it so amazed me that I would say in a year without directors like Alejandro G also nominated. If Lenny Abramson was an A-List director would he have he be a lock to win? The only other examples I can think of when this happened were the director of The Artist winning best director and Tom Hooper winning for The King’s Speech. But in those cases those were best picture winners. Room is unlikely to win best picture with only 4 nominations. But if it was a different year and an unknown like Lenny A directed an incredible flm with more than 4 nominations could they win?

Unknowns just need to direct Best Pictures, like in the examples that you gave.  Room does not have the support of the other films nominated, so Lenny Abrahamson is unfortunately a clear fifth.

Also I believe American Beauty is Sam Mendes’s first film. History in the past have shown that academy is willing to give oscar to unknown director

Yes, Sam Mendes is one of only six directors to win the Best Director Oscar for their directing debut. The others are Delbert Mann (Marty), Jerome Robbins (West Side Story), Robert Redford (Ordinary People), James L. Brooks (Terms of Endearment), and Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves).

It’s definitely interesting to point out that all of those are also Best Picture winners. I don’t think it would be possible for an unknown director to win best director without it also winning best picture, and someone like Abrahamson this year or Benh Zietlin from a couple years ago just need that extra push.
