With cinemas shutting down en masse, some studios choosing to release to on demand early, and rapid delays, I wonder how campaigning runs will be impacted, and whether any rules will be changed to acknowledge exceptional circumstances.

Also, asides from this, how else will campaigning change this year with prominent festival cancellations/delays?

The Golden Globes have done something similar to what I proposed, where eligibility requirements are waived for films up to April 30 (I expect it to be expanded).

Yeah I think we may see overall suspensions of rules requiring movies to have a cinema release. However, I think a lot of the movies that have been delayed so far could actually be delayed until next year – mostly the big budget ones that need to do huge box office (Tenet, Black Widow etc). I don’t think the studios will want to risk audiences still being nervous to come out.

I can see Tenet being delayed to July 2021. Maybe even Dune to February or Spring 2021.

The films that have halted production (Nightmare Alley, The Last Duel) are obviously 2021 releases now, and i can totally see The Batman and Matrix 4 becoming now 2022 releases AT BEST.

(I personally hope the shooting of new films will happen around this late summer, for example the new Scorsese-Di Caprio and De Niro film which was supposed to start this month in Oklahoma.  Hopefully it’s delayed only for a brief time and it’s ready to go this summer).

Some estimates are claiming that things may not even begin to return to normal in a lot of places until June or July, and even after that, studios may hold movies for a while longer because people will probably take a little while before being comfortable going to the theater again.

Studios likely won’t want to dump all of their planned movies for the year in the September-December time frame. And with how desperate they (and the theaters) will be to get the cash flow started again, they’ll likely be focusing on releasing their blockbusters, indies and awards magnets taking a backseat.

With the amount of films that’ll likely be pushed into 2021, could we see the Oscars just skipped next year? The ceremony in 2022 could honor films from 2020 and 2021 to try and encompass everything that would have been released in 2020, to keep from an Oscars ceremony that would probably otherwise be extremely blockbuster-focused / desperate to nominate anything that isn’t from a franchise.

I think that would be an extreme case, but I wouldn’t rule it out as a possibility. Thoughts?
