I’ve only seen the first Rocky so I don’t have a whole lot of character development in my head for the Rocky character but that all doesn’t really mater if you just know that 6 Rocky movies happened. They fill you in the first few minutes for those that haven’t seen the other movies but this really works as a stand alone spin off. Michael B. Jordan is great and could really drive another franchise and do it well. The big revelation in this movie is Sylvester Stallone himself. Look, I have not seen most of Stallone’s films so saying this is his best performance isn’t saying much. He puts so much compassion and humor into this performance and it is unlike I’ve ever seen him before. The awards buzzers have started whispering Stallone’s name and I wouldn’t complain about that one bit. Tessa Thompson is also wonderful as Jordan’s love interest. Some of my favorite scenes were the quite scenes that were just Jordan and Thompson bonding. But of course the other great scenes are the motivational scenes from Stallone training Jordan plus some other heartfelt scenes that I won’t give away. The writing is quite great here plus Ryan Coogler’s direction. He really gave this franchise new blood and judging by the reviews of 2-6, it was much needed. This is definitely the best boxing movie of the year over Southpaw and a great crowd pleaser. 4 starsNovember 24, 2015 at 2:16 pm #189379
Creed currently has a Metacritic score of 83 after 26 reviews. This year’s ‘sleeper contender’ about to storm the box office and perhaps surprise again with major awards love. Let’s go.November 24, 2015 at 5:16 pm #189381
Believe the hype. Deserves noms for Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Screenplay. It’s insanely good.
Here’s my Movie Minute Review:

Just swaw Creed; I disliked the original Rocky movies; I’m not a Sylvester Stallone fan – and…
I loved this movie! (: I loved Furuitvale Station and the Ryan Coogler (diretor) – Michael B Jordan (actor) combination is one I want to see for many, many years to come. It’s the best performance of Stallone’s career. The chemistry between Jordan and Stallone is palpable and exciting; Jordan and Tessa Thompson make a great romantic team; and Phylicia Rashad does the most with her small role.
Likely nominations imo:
Best Film Editing
Best Sound Mixing
Best Sound Editing
Best Original Score
Best Original Song
Best Supporting Actor
Best Original Screenplay
I think it’s in contention to win the Best Film Editing award, seriously. There are a few films that haven’t come out yet that will compete there, so it’s a wait and see situation but I was blown away by the editing rhythms, the sound design, and the assured direction.
I called this one; knew it was going to get raves! Well deserved ones!November 27, 2015 at 5:26 pm #189387
I just got dragged kicking and screaming to CREED
and made to suffer…A terrible script, so full of cliches
and mucky muck mush, that you could actually vomit
The critics were probably paid off to speak nicely of
this film..and as for STALLONE…he never could act
and no amount of press and hype will get him into the

One of the things I particularly love about this movie is it’s depiction of its working class milieu. It gets working class Philadelphia spot on right. I love that Adrian’s is an ordinary working class Italian neighborhood restaurant. There were only a few minor quibbles (the wheelies bugged me, but that’s so minor).
I love the scene where Rocky is at Adrian’s grave and reading the newspaper out loud. I’ve never been a Stallone fan but he’s great in this movie, truly outstanding and Oscar-worthy.
I am predicting 7 nominations for Creed: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing (winner), Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing. I’m not sure the Director’s branch or the Writer’s branch will go for it, but those ones are possible, and even Michael B Jordan is possible for the hard to predict fifth slot in the Best Actor race. It’s at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and rightly so.
Ryan Coogler will eventually get an Oscar nomination and maybe even win the award. He’s super talented. I loved Fruitvale Station and this furthers my admiration for his directorial skills. I’m not a fan of boxing or violence yet this film moved me and excited me. It was about more than just the surface and went deeper – I give credit to Ryan Coogler for it.November 28, 2015 at 5:38 pm #189389
If Stallone doesn’t get a nod for this film, the Academy has truly lost touch as far as I’m concerned. While it is my favorite movie so far this year, I don’t expect it to get too much in the way of nominations, though the 8.8 (!) on IMDb may prove me otherwise. Other than Supporting Actor, the only other categories I can see this getting are Sound Mixing and Editing. Though it would be a pleasant surprise if Ludwig Gorannson got a nod for score or song.
