Technically, it could be eligible, since it was originally scheduled for a theatrical release. But we won’t know if it will be made available for Oscar voters on their special streaming platform. We’ll only know for sure when the Academy publishes their list of productions eligible to be nominated for Best Picture.

According to this article acting nominations from recorded stageplays have actually occurred several times in the past, so it’s possible that Hamilton could get a Supporting Actor nomination for Leslie Odom Jr., since that field is so weak this year. I don’t think Hamilton has much of a chance anywhere else though unless there’s a significant campaign for it and a lot of fan demand.

Best Picture: Soul
Best Director: George Clooney-The Midnight Sky
Best Actor: Chadwick Boseman-Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Best Actress: Viola Davis-Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Best Supporting Actor: Delroy Lindo-Da Five Bloods
Best Supporting Actress: Amanda Seyfried-Mank
Best Original Screenplay: Soul
Best Adapted Screenplay: The Midnight SkyJuly 3, 2020 at 11:58 am #1203565186I think Hamilton could break into Best Picture, Cinematography, and Actor (Leslie Odom Jr) and maybe supporting actress if Disney plays their cards right. I think you’d be surprised by how many Oscar voters are probably fans that saw the original cast live. Interested to see if the “screenplay” is eligible.
Unless the Academy flat-out deems it ineligible and in that case, they might give it an honorary Oscar.

July 3, 2020 at 12:19 pm #1203565205I hope not. This needs to stay at the Tonys. Let real films compete for Oscars.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 3, 2020 at 1:16 pm #1203565299Yes, this is eligible. I understand how movie purists would be upset by this, but who cares?
Just watched the filmed production on Disney+. It’s an A+ film. It has the reviews, critics and Hollywood on its side. All of Hollywood is a fan of Hamilton and I can’t imagine them wanting to turn a shoulder away from this even if it is a “filmed stage show”… which in actuality is only half-true. It was filmed over the course of a couple live performances and then an additional non-audience filming.
I think the only downfall is that this is airing in July 2020 when the Oscar nominations probably won’t come out until March 2021.
Having said that… and with a lack of competition + Disney campaigning money, I can see the following nominations happening after watching this:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Supporting Actor – Leslie Odom, Jr.
Best Supporting Actress – Phillipa Soo
Best Editing
Best SoundAnd if they REALLY love it and go crazy…
Best Actor – Lin-Manuel Miranda

Best Supporting Actress – Renee Elise Goldsberry
Best CinematographyJuly 3, 2020 at 1:19 pm #1203565305I mean if they let this be eligible, then they’d have to let singers who film their concerts and release for theatrical release be eligible in the future.

I hope it wins Best Picture just to make gatekeeping film purists like you furious.

They technically are allowed in technical categories and documentary in some cases, I believe. But Ariana Grande performing her own concert as herself isn’t the same thing as an actor playing a role on stage. She wouldn’t be eligible.

As long as she has some skits in her concerts/fan interaction/those filmed interludes, the studio can stretch it and say it’s “acting”. But imagine certain artists begging big artists to be opening acts so they can be campaigned in best supporting actor/actress. We don’t need to name names but we all know which ones who care about billboard hot 100 and Grammy noms/wins would definitely jump on this chance lol. Hell I wouldn’t blame them either.

But it’s not. It’s not acting. People in documentaries can’t win acting awards. It’s the same thing here.

I like to think that they’ll put Leslie Odom in lead. Phillipa Soo is more borderline so I can understand a supporting placement, but even though Odom is definitely the secondary lead compared to Miranda, it’s still very much his story as well, and he gives the best performance.
Also, putting him in lead opens up supporting actor for Daveed Diggs, who in my opinion, gives the next best performance aside from Odom.
