Apparently Disney is still going to push it for the Oscars with a full campaign. Interested to see if the Voters go for it. What will the Academy do if people vote for it anyway?

They can’t vote for it if it’s ineligible. Disney can push it if they want but they’d need a rule change first.

The Playlist spoke to someone from The Academy who confirmed it’s ineligible. The rule states ‘works that are essentially promotional or instructional are not eligible, nor are works that are essentially unfiltered records of performances.’

So yeah it’s ineligible without a rule change whether Disney like it or not.

Amazing, transcendent, and everything else that’s already been said about this masterwork applies here. It’s one of those rare times when you know that you’re watching greatness, something game-changing and historic. I’ve only experienced that feeling a few times in my life. Very glad I finally saw this in any capacity. It’s funny to me though knowing that some people paid thousands of dollars to see this live on Broadway, while I saw it for free on my phone in bed lol. Life in the “new normal” for ya.

Disney won’t campaign for Hamilton if the Oscars themselves have said it’s not eligible. That tweet is irrelevant because none of those movies were nominated.

Hamilton will do well at the Golden Globes and maybe get a couple if other nominations (I could see SAG and Critics Choice embracing it), but nothing more than that.

Scott Feinberg from The Hollywood Reporter has now pretty much confirmed that Hamilton will be eligible for the Emmys, but not the Oscars. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/emmys-tv-academy-merges-variety-talk-and-variety-sketch-categories-expands-limited-series-to-include-anthology-series

    from the article:

…any non-documentary film that is uploaded to the film Academy’s streaming site — in other words, any non-documentary film that is seeking Oscar recognition — will be disqualified from the Emmy competition. This means that something like Greyhound, from Apple TV+, will not be Emmy-eligible, but Hamilton, from Disney+, will be.

Does this mean that Hamilton was not uploaded to the Academy’s streaming site — and so is Emmy competitive? But if Disney does add Hamilton to the site, it could be Oscar competitive?

No, because the Emmys are not allowing any Oscar crossover anymore, and I guess the film Academy now has a rule where filmed stage productions are ineligible (something I didn’t know about when I first started this thread, but they used to be eligible in the past).

Hamilton has officially been deemed eligible for the film categories at the Golden Globes.

Knowing that this is that same awards group that nominated last year’s remake of The Lion King as an animated film, it shouldn’t be that surprising.

Well, last year’s remake of The Lion King was an animated film. It would literally be absolutely ridiculous not to accept it in that category.
