Zimmer utilized “Nimrod”, from Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations. I don’t know much well this work, but the soundtrack is the best thing about Dunkirk. So make Zimmer’s soundtrack unelegible for a boring reason would be just silly.

I very much doubt the use of “Nimrod” will be enough to disqualify Zimmer’s work, especially as the theme is so heavily adapted and distorted and is not used throughout the whole score. This is similar to the composers of The Social Network using their own version of “In the Hall of the Mountain King” from Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt”; one arrangement amongst tons of original music was not enough to merit disqualification, even with this notoriously picky branch.

If he was to be disqualified, it would probably be the first time an absolute locked frontrunner was left out. The Revenant and Arrival weren’t threats Morricone’s first win and La La Land’s original musical score. Zimmer is in front atm, and only Williams’ score for The Papers (which hasn’t been released yet) could possibly beat it.

Is timex going to be consulted on the use of the clock ticking for the entirety of the movie ?

Nah. Burwell for Wonderstruck is my favorite. His score was absolutely raved at Cannes. Desplat for Shape of Water is strong contender too

If theme is heavily modified, the score will be eligible.

I hope so. That score was relatively unobtrusive, which belies the nature of this work. The Sound Editing, btw, hopefully wont be ignored.

I have no doubt that Wonderstruck has a great soundtrack. But this film has been received with mixed reviews and has almost no chance to be nominated for BP. Non BP nominees rarely win and they usually win on years with almost none BP nominees on Original Score (like 2015 when Bridge of Spies was the only BP nominee to be nominated in Original Score).

In contrast, Dunkirk is an acclaimed movie that’s absolutely being nominated for BP and has a great soundtrack.

One advantage Wonderstruck has is that half of it is apparently like a silent film, so the score will be front and centre. If enough Academy voters watch it, it could beat the Dunkirk score which is often overshadowed by the sound design (not a criticism).

Nah, I’d say this is as much a frontrunner as Greenwood’s “Their Will be Blood”, which was disqualified.

Anyways, I don’t think this’ll be disqualified as the score is pretty continuous, and almost all original.  It will probably split a lot of votes though, so I think this category is wide open; look out for Desplat’s “The Shape of Water”, Johannson’s “Mother”, and Marianelli’s “Darkest Hour.”
