Awards shows of any kind are progressively losing audience whether they nominate big projects (in movie case Joker, Black Panther, in TV case GOT) and award major stars (Leo, Brad) or not. It’s an outdated entertainment that didn’t move with times. It’s completely unnecessary to sit through the whole snooze-a-thon when clips of relevant wins are instantly available so easy to catch up while streaming more interesting content.

So influence will remain the same and viewership won’t pick up after covid is over.

It’s a shame that they succumbed to the pressure. They have their own criteria for choosing members. Why should a private organization be told who to include among their membership all based on superficial reasons?

Well, as much as their membership is their choice, it’s the people’s choice whether they watch the Globes or not. And if people say they won’t watch them until they get their shit together, the HFPA can decide whether they want to “succumb to the pressure” or to become even more irrelevant than they are becoming regardless. So in the end it’s still their choice. It’s not like there’s a law forcing them.

And if people say they won’t watch them until they get their shit together,

wait, is that the offical cope over low ratings, that people didn’t watch because their membership wasn’t inclusive? Hilarious. Awards are getting more and more inclusive each year and ratings are nose-diving left and right. Oscars, Globes, Emmys keep losing viewership while increasing representation because representation cannot fix the fundamental problem with awards shows – self-congratulatory wankfest that goes on forever and can be seen in abrivated form seconds after something relavant happens allowing the audience to watch something else in the meantime. Whether white people tap themselves on the back, or black people or mix of white and black and other, it’s the same boring crap, all the while people have more and more choices to watch something else.

That’s … not at all what I said. Hence why I referred to them becoming “even more irrelevant than they are becoming regardless”.

the audiences for those other awards shows are minimal, and unknown to most Americans tbh.

I don’t think so because the people who vote are very likely to watch these shows. Non-voters watching or not watching don’t have an influence on the outcome
