It’ll surprise a lot of pundits when it gets 1 nomination, for Visual Effects. And it won’t even deserve that.

Haha, snap! (Minus the part how it doesn’t deserve a visual effects nom, as I think it does.) Some of the categories people are expecting The Martian to easily crack – Production Design, the sound categories – are actually really competitive. OK, it might get nominated for them, but think about it; for PD we have Carol, Crimson Peak, The Danish Girl, Bridge of Spies, Macbeth, even Cinderella or Black Mass. Having just seen Crimson Peak I reckon it could also get into Sound Editing – remember Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992? It actually won that award, and what’s more, Crimson Peak’s supervising sound editor is Randy Thom, a multiple Oscar winner and nominee. Then there’s Inside Out, Mad Max, Star Wars, The Hateful Eight (Django got in for sound editing) and Bridge of Spies (likewise Lincoln for mixing). Considering all this, I’m actually expecting The Martian to only manage a Visual Effects nod.

    Very geeky post, I know.

It’ll on depend on where the buzz for the film is come nomination day. It’s a movie a lot of people are talking about now, so it’s easy to see how it could get traction. In a few months, maybe not as much.

I will say PD is competitive for sure, but remember Interstellar got in last year (on waning buzz) and Gravity the year before it. The Martian’s being compared most often to those two so it’s possible it performs similarly.
