For the first time ever, we could have all-black or at least majority-black Director nominees. To my knowledge, there has never been a year with 5 full-on acclaimed or likely to be acclaimed films that all have awards hype behind them. This could finally be the year of #OscarsSoBlack!

    Ryan Coogler “Black Panther”
Barry Jenkins “If Beale Street Could Talk”
    Spike Lee “BlackkKlansman”
Boots Riley “Sorry To Bother You”
    Steve McQueen “Widows”

I say this because all of those movies that have already been seen have received some kind of awards buzz and critical acclaim, and those that haven’t been seen are likely to be acclaimed going off the track record of the filmmakers. Jenkins and McQueen haven’t delivered a bomb yet!

It is important to note that I think there could easily be the most black acting nominees ever this year as well.

Regina King “If Beale Street Could Talk” (Recent 2-time Emmy winner and nominee this year for a canceled Netflix show “Seven Seconds!” Talk about some serious industry respect.)
Daveed Diggs “Blindspotting” (Tony winner for the villainous Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton!)
Chadwick Boseman “Black Panther” (All hail King T’Challa!)
Michael B. Jordan “Black Panther” (Recent Emmy nominee as producer of “Fahrenheit 451”)
Letitia Wright “Black Panther” (Recent Emmy nominee for her acting in “Black Mirror: Black Museum”)
Viola Davis “Widows” (She’s Viola, what more can you say? First black actress to Triple Crown with a Tony, an Emmy, and finally an Oscar.)
Cynthia Erivo “Widows” (Reputation as a Tony and Grammy winner for “The Color Purple” could help if voters want her to Triple Crown. Then, all she would need is an Emmy in order to EGOT.)
Daniel Kaluuya “Widows” (Recent Oscar nominee in Lead for playing a hero in “Get Out” could lead to his first Oscar win in Supporting for playing a villain in “Widows.”)
John David Washington “BlackkKlansman” (Being the son of 2-time winner Denzel could help.)
Lakeith Stanfield “Sorry To Bother You” (Also one of the stars of a 16-time Emmy nominated show this year, Atlanta.)

Think about it, 8 black acting nominees at the Oscars! Wouldn’t that be awesome?! I don’t think that Danai Gurira has nearly enough buzz for “Black Panther,” sadly. Lupita N’yongo is already an Oscar winner but I don’t think her role was showy or memorable enough to make an impact with the actors branch, plus anti-superhero movie bias is always a factor.

What do you all think about this? I know the BET Awards exist, but the Oscars should try to be far more inclusive if the contenders themselves genuinely do merit it, and I can say for certain that “Black Panther” and “BlackkKlansman” would be deserving nominees in major categories, even though I can admit I didn’t find either of them to be flawless.

P.S. I know the anti-superhero movie bias is so bad even Patrick Stewart’s hyped performance in Logan couldn’t get nominated last year. Still, an Oscar fan and can dream, right? If “Black Panther” were to win both the “Popular Film” and general “Best Picture” award it would be a pretty cool moment, even though deep down I know it realistically is nothing but a fun dream.

There is a whole lot more chance of this happening than an all LGBTQ year. That is for sure.

    1 Best Picture
    0 Best Director
0 Out Lead or Supporting Actor
0 Out Lead or Supporting Actress

I think you’re overreaching on the Black Panther nominations. It will for sure get in for the new Popular film category. Maybe still in for BP, but outside of that its best chances are song and costumes. Its not getting Director or any acting noms. Sorry to Bother you might get in for screenplay, but that as well is not going to get in for director or acting.

Don’t forget about BlackkKlansman! I still want to believe Ryan Coogler can get in for Director and Panther can get in for Picture even if the movie gets completely shut out of the acting and screenplay categories, if the love from the tech branches (minus the nod for VFX, since those were criticized by some people) is really there, ala Mad Max: Fury Road a few years ago.

Right now, my predictions have the following African Americans nominated in the major categories:

Spike Lee and Steve McQueen are both nominated for Best Director, and Lee wins. Barry Jenkins is snubbed.

Viola Davis is nominated for Best Actress.

Regina King is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Barry Jenkins, Spike Lee, and Steve McQueen are all nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Lee wins.

just cause she’s an Oscar away from EGOT, it doesn’t mean she can actually get one; at least an acting one

I’m afraid Riley, Stanfield, Diggs, Wright, and Washington are pipe dreams, and Coogler, Boseman and Jordan are very unlikely.

That said, there’s a good chance of the Best Director lineup consisting of almost or entirely people who aren’t white cis men. Personally, I’m predicting only Damien Chazelle to represent that demographic in the category, with one white woman and three black men making it in.

In the acting races, it’s looking like business as usual to me: the overwhelming majority will be white. I’m currently only predicting Davis, Kaluuya and King to be nominated in their respective categories. BlacKkKlansman might well get lots of Oscars love but as far as acting nods go, Adam Driver will probably be the go-to person.

I think someone who we should watch out for is Regina Hall. She has two films in contention. Support the Girls is exactly the type of film to get a random SAG acting nomination and possibly even more. It very much gives me Captain Fantastic vibes. She is also in The Hate U Give, which I’m not sure what to think of yet, but I’m just imagining how amazing “Oscar nominee Issa Rae” sounds.

The entire cast of Beale Street is obviously in contention as well. I have never been a fan of Stephen James, so I’m not expecting an Oscar nominated performance from him, but he has Homecoming coming out soon, so maybe that can add to his buzz.

Widows also has Daniel Kaluuya and Cynthia Ervo, so maybe they can make an impact.

Speaking of Widows, not the topic but this could be a decent year for Hispanic representation as we could have Michelle Rodriguez from Widows and possibly some people from the cast of Roma. Oscar Isaac also has a lot of films this year so maybe he can finally break in.

Oscar nominee Ruth Negga is in Ad Astra, but I’m not sure if her part is significant. Mahershala Ali supposedly has a good role in Green Book, but I do not trust the team behind the scenes of that film.

I definitely wouldn’t say Washington is a long shot. I could easily see him getting in especially since it’s looking like BlackKklansman will do pretty decent.

There will still be four other nominees and Davis is almost certainly one of them.

I love him in BlacKkKlansman – he’s funny, subtly sly and almost achingly swag – but the role isn’t Oscary at all. I hope to be proven wrong, he would deserve the recognition.
