By This Had Oscar Buzz contenders, I mean as follows, in reference to the podcast.

    1) The film had expectations or predictions of Oscars success, be it nominations or wins, f0r the film or acting or elsewhere

    2) The film then preceded to get ZERO Oscar nominations

This sounds simple, right? Well, with this year, I’m not sure. There are so few films this year that I think we might genuinely have no films like this. Technical categories of sound, costumes, VFX, and elsewhere offer potential refuge, as does a weak Original Screenplay field.

What films even have a chance to be THOB films from the 2021 season? I’d love to hear your ideas.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", AMANDA SEYFRIED FOR "MANK", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

Well we just had a mention of how French Exit May end up being like that.

But regardless of whether or not we get anything like that, there’s no chance of a “this had buzz” film as bad as Cats this year.

    The Last Thing He Wanted

Fuck that was this year. Yeah that definitely qualifies, people were predicting that for above-the-line wins for the 92nd Ceremony when it still looked like it was a 2019 release.

Weren’t people predicting that ever since Mudbound nominated?

    Ammonite.

I think even with that film underperforming, it might get a Costume or Production Design, especially with not that many period piece British dramas in competition.

    French Exit

I’m leaving the possibility of a Pfeiffer nom there, but that door is closing.

    The King of Staten Island?

Who was giving a Pete Davidson movie Oscar buzz?

    On the Rocks

Yeah, if Murray or Screenplay can’t slide in, I can see this. This being the Murray/Coppola followup to Lost In Translation put super high expectations on it.

    The Last Thing He Wanted

Holy fuck, this film has the most shocking failure narrative of a presumed Oscars contender this year. The followup to Mudbound that was a garbled mess…

I’ve seen you write in various threads multiple times about how others on here are too quick to write contenders off. Here you are doing it.

I think she has a chance but her odds aren’t that good after that middling reception. Right now I have her getting in at GG and BAFTA (possibly CC) but I’m not confident in an Oscar nomination. And I don’t see her getting in at SAG.

I’m not writing Kate off I’m just disagreeing with the user’s argument that she has a “good” chance of getting in. She can still get in but I wouldn’t say it’s a “good” chance.

Unlike other users on here I don’t say “this performer peaked” or “there is no way this happens”.
