Can he even sing? Wait, he doesn’t really have to because Dylan couldn’t carry a tune.

looooool! I do consider dylan a great singer, but the main strengths of his vocals are the humor and intelligence he projects, the sort of thing a truly great actor might be able to embody, but I doubt chalamet is up to the task, despite my fondness for him

I think you’re making it sound more difficult than it actually is. Just think of all the musical theatre actors out there. Plenty of people can project humor and intelligence into their singing. The fact that Chalamet won’t even have to sound good but just act while singing takes away a challenge. I’m not saying playing Bob Dylan will be easy, but a good actor like Chalamet can definitely get it done.

I think Chalamet has the potential to win an Oscar before his 29th birthday if everything was fair. He was outstanding in Beautiful Boy, but AMPAS didn’t want him to be a back to back Oscar nominee at 23, so they snubbed him. They see the kid has the talent already before he’s even 25. With each role, he gets better. He was great in The King too, with several Oscar clip scenes had the film been on any awards radar. I think the downside to Chalamet is that he’s too pretty, he’s an exceptionally good looking young man, with talent to boot, and that’s a threat to the old school older male voters who would rather avoid voting for him until he’s well into his 30s or possibly 40s. I dare think Florence Pugh or hell, Julia Butters may get an Oscar before Timmy, just out of spite.

First off, I don’t think his lack of a nomination for Beautiful Boy was due to voters intentionally wanting to snub him. Most people just didn’t care about the movie, and all the actual nominees that year were in much stronger contenders that people were much more passionate about, in addition to all of them but Rockwell (he’s fun for his limited screen time, but he’s definitely a coattail nominee) having very strong performances. I’m not gonna deny that “slap the stud syndrome” is real, but I feel like whenever a good looking guy gets snubbed, their fans act like that’s the only reason why it happened, when there can easily be other factors in play.

And second of all, he hasn’t gotten better with each role. Call Me by Your Name is by far his best performance, way better than anything he’s done since.

Exactly and for example in smaller roles like in Ladybird and little Women he really does not give very strong performances although I believe his performance in LadyBird was weak due to the role he was playing and him not getting a lot to work with

those “plenty of people” didn’t become bob dylan for a reason, there’s a difference between singing to showcase humor and intelligence, and singing that naturally reflects the person behind the voice that possesses those qualities, subtle difference but it could make or break the performance.

although if we’re sticking to the theme of the thread, it’s not like voters are that particular about the quality of musical sequences, so if everything else works out for him, he’ll get his biopic oscar in time to break brody’s record even if he doesn’t get the singing right

Chalamet is currently 24yrs old and has 5 years or so to break Adrien Brody’s record of being youngest Best Actor Winner in Oscars history. I think Chalamet is winning Best Actor in next 4yrs. What do you think?

Depends on what his upcoming movies are.

Come on people, I’m not biased but you can’t look at him and think he’s EXCEPTIONALLY good looking. He looks good but let’s not push it.

I think T-Chal looks more like George W. Bush than James Dean with that face. XD

    I can’t un-see this now.

I never really thought of his Lady Bird performance as being noticeably weak, but I do agree that there was very little to work with. The role is basically just a one note fuck boy. This feels intentional as most of the characters have depth, but Lady Bird’s “cool” new friends come across as generic and shallow, showing that they’re not as special and unique as they really think they are. It’s actually funny, I knew a guy who was strikingly similar the character of Kyle. A wannabe musician who acted pretentious, made up bullshit conspiracy theories, presented himself as caring to girls when all he wanted to do was screw them, and acted like he was above social norms when he still conformed to them. He even had the same exact name as Chalamet’s character. The main difference was he was a lot uglier and shorter.

I think Adrien Brody had the benefit of appearing older than his years. He had a sense of maturity in his performance in The Pianist. Timothee has no such luxury. I find myself rooting for him because of his CMBYN performance and his personality, but I’m still waiting for another great performance, as I think the industry is. I do hope the record is broken soon, though, more so because there are so many great up-and-coming actors it would be a shame for them to be overlooked solely for being younger.

I like Chalamet but so far he is a one performance wonder. Was terrible in the misguided Beautiful Boy being why he wasn’t nominated and Little Women he was just there. That being said, his best is clearly yet to come. French Dispatch, Dylan goes electric biopic and Dune look very interesting. I think because of his young age and boyish good looks people go a bit over the top too much.

Darlings, the obsession with this guy is truly exhausting. Is he the only young actor alive? Give the Prime Minister a break.

As a famous singer said, "ain't nobody gonna Thatcher, Thatcher, Thatcher!"
