Watched “The Lighthouse” last night and was absolutely blown away by his performance. Why in the (expletive) wasn’t he nominated for an Academy Award? https://xender.vip/ It looks like the film was nominated for best cinematography, but can anyone explain this obvious snub (in my opinion)? Is there a tendency not to nominate horror movies in general? Is there some kind of history between the Academy and Dafoe I’m unaware of?November 1, 2020 at 11:51 pm #1203815692
There’s just a horror bias. They don’t like nominating horror performances.November 2, 2020 at 1:06 am #1203815746
The Academy has nominated Dafoe multiple times before, so yeah, I think it was just horror bias (+ fatigue from previous nomination)November 2, 2020 at 1:12 am #1203815752
He gave one of the greatest performances in cinema history.November 2, 2020 at 4:32 am #1203815892

I don’t buy the fatigue argument when other actors have been nominated three or four times in a row. I just don’t think The Lighthouse was priority viewing for most Academy members (and the actors’ branch is not the most adventurous). Even most critics groups didn’t come through for the film or Dafoe as much as they might have, frustratingly.November 2, 2020 at 11:50 am #1203816702
The Lighthouse is a niche film that you either love or hate. The story probably didn’t appeal to most voters.
Dafoe & Pattinson should’ve been nominated.

Dafoe was amazing and better than all of the other supporting contenders, but he should’ve been placed in lead.
Pattinson was also fantastic, but undeniably overshadowed by Dafoe.November 2, 2020 at 12:47 pm #1203816768
Dafoe (and Song Kang-Ho from Parasite) were WAY better than all of their competition that year.

Pure genre bias. He should have gotten the win.
FYC: Riz Ahmed + Paul Raci (Sound of Metal)
Sidney Flanigan (Never Rarely Sometimes Always)

One of the best performances I’ve ever seen. It’s their loss.
Best Actor: Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round)
Best Actress: Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)
