I’m mad. I can’t see this until mid Jan.

Just a few more weeks. I am in the same boat with Parallel Mothers, I want to see it so badly and have to wait until January 14th – ugh! And it’s even worse with The Worst Person in the World which doesn’t open here until February! and Flee, I need for that to open soon too. Drive My Car: Jan. 14th. The waiting is so hard when you are so looking forward to particular movies during awards season!

Who else feels the way I do that The Tragedy of Macbeth will get a BP nomination? The visuals alone makes me think this won’t miss one of those 5 slots beyond the top 5 films that all are locks (Belfast, Dune, King Richard, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story – I don’t believe that Licorice Pizza is really that high on the list for BP as the odds indicate). I will be disappointed if TTOM isn’t nominated; I have it #9 on my ten best films of 2021 list.

Frances probably won’t even be nominated.

Just looking at the fact they gave her 2 Oscars only 2 years apart I wouldn’t even count her out for at  least a nom lol

I’m not ruling her out. After her latest win…..anything is possible

Makes sense I guess but even if she ends up nominated there’s no way she is winning.

2 oscars only 2 years apart is one of the reasons why she won’t  be nominated.

    I hope you enjoy it! Looking forward to hearing your opinion of the movie! heads up: it’s in 4:3 ratio so don’t think you are losing any of the image! (;

I have gotten told off for stating that I find Denzel Washington’s performance the weakest in the film. If people don’t agree with me, fine, but I am really tired of being personally attacked for having a different opinion.

Macbeth is a cinematic experience one should view on the biggest screen imaginable. It’s an insanely beautiful looking and sounding film. The performances are worthy of a SAG Ensemble nomination. Washington, McDormand, & Hunter were the stand outs. Each deserve Oscar nods.

I am asking that people not snark at me and I will ask a question: could you understand what Denzel’s Macbeth was saying during his soliloquies? I couldn’t understand many of his words. I understood Frances’s Lady Macbeth during her soliloquies and understood everyone else’s words just fine.

For me Denzel’s performance was the weakest. I understand that others love him and I really don’t – I have always found his work to be only average and that’s o.k. People get to have minority opinions.

I just loved Alex Hassell’s performance as Ross. Turns out I have seen him on British television but this is his breakthrough film role. I wouldn’t mind at all if Kathryn Hunter was a surprise nominee in Supporting Actress.

The film deserves nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Sound (I don’t think it made the shortlist though?). It is the second best designed film of 2021 (West Side Story is #1).

Just got home from seeing this.

I went to a local theater in Portland called the Hollywood Theater. The theater was built in 1929 and it looked like there wasn’t much done to the place, which I love.

Regarding the film, starting with THE GOOD. The cinematography, the production design, costumes, and sound were all AMAZING. I truly enjoyed the supporting cast. Kathryn Hunter was the BEST in the movie. Her voice, the body movements, the facial expressions, and I believe she was the “old man” as well. WOW! I needed the whole movie to be about the witches.

THE BAD. WTF! Why on Eart would they quote Shakespear word-for-word. That was brutal. I was hoping the end would come near because of that choice. That ruined the film for me as I am not a big Shakespear person. Also, Denzel. WTF. Did he… try? He looked AMAZING but gave his usual performance. I kind of feel the same about McDormand as well. The director made poor choices and it proved that he is not much without his brother outside of the beauty of the film. Why no accents for the entire cast? As one spoke, he sounded like he was from Scotland, when the other would speak, he sounded like he was from Detroit. WTF!

I am heartbroken. I’ve waited so long to see this and left disappointed. I would not nominate this outside of the tech categories and Supporting Actress.

While I enjoyed the movie much more than you did and thought the supporting performers were all excellent – particularly Kathryn Hunter and Alex Hassell as Ross – I am wondering whether you could understand Denzel Washington during his soliloquies? I felt a strong need for closed captioning/subtitles and I am someone who has seen numerous film and stage productions of Macbeth over the years. I simply could not understand him. I think people are over-praising him because “he is Denzel Washington so he must be great” rather than actually assessing his actual performance in the movie. I honestly think he gives the film’s worst performance.

You are the definition of a “hater”. You don’t even seem particularly concerned about what people think about the film. You just have this strange need to convince everyone that Denzel Washington sucks. You are doing it on the Best Actor thread and have been called out for it by multiple posters. We get it already. You don’t like Washington in this (and as you said, you don’t like him in general, so you were probably always going to feel this way). That’s fine. But this is starting to look like a smear campaign to everyone and you refuse to stop. Why does it matter so much to you that people dislike Denzel because you do? Let people make up their own minds how to feel about his performance and stop being so blatantly insecure.

As I said on the other thread, I think Washington as Macbeth given the best film performance by an American actor in a Shakespearan lead role…ever. I’d probably have had Marlon Brando in Julius Ceasar at the top previously, but I think Washington has surprassed Brando’s performance in that. But that is just my opinion.

Here’s the thing: you could have just written your last paragraph and that would have been fine. It’s your opinion and it’s valid as your opinion. But once again you have chosen to attack me for my opinion, which is also valid since it is my opinion! It is not o.k. for you to attack my opinion and to engage in name-calling and project onto me your own feelings as if they are mine.

I am hardly trying to convince anyone of anything. I am aware that others think he’s a terrific actor and have said that I don’t particularly like his acting. He’s competent but he isn’t for a me a “great actor”. I think he gives the weakest performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth, a movie that I otherwise really love. Others are entitled to their opinions and I am predicting he will get an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for it. Predicting and agreeing are not the same thing.

I have asked if others had difficulty understanding his words during his soliloquies. This is a fair question.
