Finally had the chance to see this. I’ve decided to add it as a longshot in Director and Score, in addition to the more widely predicted nods in Picture, Actor, Cinematography and Prod Design.

Not certain about its chances in Screenplay or Supporting Actress. Kathryn Hunter gave a unique performance that will probably be one of my main takeaways, the consensus 5 just feel strong for now. But as I think others have said it feels like a very BAFTA jury-friendly performance.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, but I do agree with the users who said its use of the original Shakespearean language held it back. That being said, I think most of the actors did a really good job conveying the emotion behind the lines so I did get a general sense of what was going on.

Kathryn Hunter did steal the show and I hope she gets nominated. I disagree with the people saying Denzel felt flat. I really enjoyed his more understated, naturalistic approach rather than going really big like a lot of people do when they perform Shakespeare. He was very grounded, and because of that even if I couldn’t quite understand what he was saying due to the language, I always was able to understand what he was feeling and the message he was trying to convey. Frances was also pretty good, but not great, and I think other actresses could have done a better job. I didn’t dislike her performance, but was a little disappointed by it seeing as Lady Macbeth is such an iconic character and her performance should’ve been the stand out.

The production design, cinematography, and sound were all top notch and I would nominate this film for all of those things + best actor, best supporting actress, and maybe best picture. I still have some things I need to see so I’m not sure if this will make the cut.

    7.5/10

The Tragedy of Macbeth – Making the Film | Apple TV+ ^ Link for those interested. ^ After seeing this BTS video, I’m surprised it didn’t make the shortlist for VFX like Mank did last year.

And it didn’t make the Costume Design longlist either. Initially I thought maybe the costumes in the movie were nothing special, but after seeing the movie I think it should’ve made it.

I read this book and was not left indifferent. There’s a lot to think about. Since I love to read, I always try to find time for it. But now I’m a student and I can’t always do it. Just recently wrote an essay on the tragedy of Macbeth and recommended reading my paper. It can be a good example for other students.

I’ll watch anything with Denzel. This is further proof for me that he can do, any role better than most.
Great cast, production, costuming, and true to the bard.
