Sure, the last time Gaga was a real Oscar contender, all voters knew that she’d be nominated for both song and actress in “A Star Is Born.” Remember, in the final round of Oscar voting, all academy members can vote out of category, not just by peer group. So lots of voters could ditch Gaga for Best Actress because they all knew she’d prevail for song. Does that hurt her or help her this time? Some voters might think: Well, it’d really be great to see her on that Oscar stage again. Now she’s really proven that she’s a serious actress and we only have one place to vote for her, so, what the heck, let’s go Ga-Ga. Or perhaps in both acting examples, they just don’t take her serious enough as a thespian. What do YOU think?

They just liked Olivia more and since Olivia won the BAFTA, the British block dictates the wins in the acting categories most of the time. If they like Gaga the most this time, they will vote for her.

I think it would help her, I guess? And on that year Glenn Close and Olivia Colman were a bit ahead based off the awards they were already able to won.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 14, 2022 at 3:51 pm #1204728161Shallow wasn’t a consolation Oscar. There was absolutely no way she was losing it and she wasn’t a serious contender for Best Actress either. It was always between Glenn and Olivia as soon as Gaga lost the Globe

January 14, 2022 at 4:52 pm #1204728342I feel like it will help because HoG has proven to a lot of people that ASIB wasn’t a fluke when it comes to her acting. That might make people vote for her this time around. It also helps that the industry seemingly loves HoG a lot more than the critics did.

Absolutely not.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 14, 2022 at 10:58 pm #1204728837I think already being a previous Best Actress Academy and BAFTA nominee already shows she’s crossed that threshold of “being taken seriously”. Former popstars that tried acting recently never managed to receive acting nominations from those 2.
If anything they take her more seriously now that it’s her second Oscar contention, and she won NYFCC.
The ones that still try hard to not take her seriously are people in Film Twitter, but they’re not awards voters anyway. They were predicting 0-1 mentions for HoG at the BAFTA this year, it got 13.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 14, 2022 at 11:07 pm #1204728847I thought by consolation you mean Glenn Close for her overdue status, plus the viral speech from Golden Globe. Voters care the most about performances, other things like the role, box office or movie getting into BP are just nice little touches. They don’t really care that much if she could win song as well last time, if they find her performance worthy, she’ll be nominated.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 14, 2022 at 11:24 pm #1204728854Whomever AMPAS members think is “their time to be nominated.” It’s usually how new comers get their first nom while actresses who have been nominated before may miss out. There’s only 5 spots, where two or three are assured, while the last spots are a toss up. Roll the dice and whomever’s name come up is the one they write down on their nomination sheet.
ReplyCopy URLI use to be really into film, but now I just view them as entertainment, binging tv series here and there, and making my own judgment on film performances. I try not to take such things like the Oscar race seriously (ultimately meaningless); in my mind, almost any actor with the right agent, publicist and manager can land the right role which can lead to a nomination.
January 15, 2022 at 1:32 am #1204728942Gaga’s song Oscar was never going to be a consolation prize, ‘Shallow’ was the heart of the movie, that category was truly locked for Gaga since the beginning, it was undeniable.
As for acting, it was her first movie, she was never going to win at her first try especially in a year very competitive like that one with Glenn and Colman in the race, the last time a contender won for her first movie was Marlee Matlin more than 30 years ago with a particular narrative, it happened very few times in Oscar history, the nomination was already her reward.
This time she proved ASIB wasn’t a fluke and that she can deliver acting without music involved and with a more complex role with accent, so it will definitely benefit her, however also in this case with this being her second role another acting nomination only would be already a big achievement.

This is kind of the point though. Would Gaga have lost the Actress Globe if she wasn’t winning the Song one? I doubt it. And then she probably would have won SAG as well as Close’s campaign would never have been given that first boost.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 15, 2022 at 5:36 am #1204729090Shallow was never a consolation prize, but she has a better chance this time. Her only hurdle is the fact that Kidman plays Lucy. But if Gaga lands that nomination, she’ll surely be win competitive

I remain Lady Gaga's BIGGEST FAN
January 15, 2022 at 6:24 am #1204729147To say that Lady Gaga is getting nominated JUST because of her name is delusional.
