Weird that GD hates Kathryn Bigelow. She is so great Directing action like Point Break. And great at tense too. Zero Dark Thirty is Underrated. Kathryn Bigelow reminds me of Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick

I recommend Smithereens by Susan Seidleman. It shows up on TCM Underground every few months (late Friday nights.)

Amazing film about the 80’s punk scene in downtown NYC.

(She also directed Desperately Seeking Susan which is sort of a more light hearted version of Smithereens. Then her career film apart with She-Devil. She never really recovered from that Streep bomb.)

I *loved* Zero Dark Thirty. The Osama hunt scene in the house was BRILLIANTLY shot. Kathryn Bigelow really impressed me with her stylistic choices in that movie. God knows how David. O. Russell got in for SLP?!! but she didn’t. It’s truly insane.

Susanne Bier’s In A Better World and Nadine Labaki’s Capernaum are two great ones i would like to add to the conversation.

I just love movies. And awards.

Nice to see that this thread is still alive 🙂 they are quite well known, so it won’t be anything new for many of you, but I’ll contribute with Mia Hansen-Løve and Alice Rohrwacher.

For the month of May I’ve been posting some of my favourite films directed by women. There’s about 200 films I’ve listed by some of the more known names as well as directors you not be aware of.

My favourite films directed by women are Zero Dark Thirty and Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Rounding out my top ten from last decade are American Honey, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Clemency, The Edge of Seventeen, Honey Boy, The Kids Are All Right, Lady Bird and The Tale, plus The Babadook is iconic. Never Rarely Sometimes Always and Promising Young Woman were the best films of 2020.
