Davis is that rare lead that people think is supporting otherwise the rest seem like the same old pattern of dropping down a category to win.
This will make four years in a row Supporting Actor will go to someone arguably a lead.
Opinions?
This is almost like the infamous “Rooney Moore” year. Someone call Diane Ladd.
ReplyFebruary 25, 2021 at 4:30 am #1204060407Daniel Kaluuya…..I saw Judas & the Black Messiah last Saturday and then saw The Little Things on Sunday. Kaluuya does a great job but is a lead actor. Jared Leto is truly a supporting actor and also does a great job. Too bad he may miss out on a nomination due to category fraud.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 25, 2021 at 4:38 am #1204060411I voted Kaluuya. I don’t consider Sacha Baron Cohen or Viola Davis category frauds but I do also see Maria Bakalova as a category fraud.
But the real answer for me here is the entire four person cast of One Night in Miami. They each hold a similar amount of weight to the story and each of them felt just as prominent as the other. They all either should have competed in supporting or all in lead.

I vote for Bakalova because she would be safer for a nomination if she was campaigning in lead.

With Andra Day receiving solid-to-great personal mentions in most reviews, I don’t think that’s the case anymore. In lead categories prestige bait tends to win out over irreverent comedy.

Poor Joe Pesci, he probably was second last year. That would be the second time he lost to a fraud. He could have had three Oscars. (if he had still won for Goodfellas if he had won for Raging Bull.)
Odd how the Globes stood up to Borat and stopped that fraud but let the others slip thru.

I think it was a campaign decision by Amazon to submit for the Comedy Actress category, where Bakalova had an easier shot at a nomination and win. The HFPA merely agreed to it.
