I am a big fan of the ‘Star Wars’ films, but in my opinion, they are not all on the same caliber. Some great, some good, some not-so-great, and some are polarizing.

Rather than the typical poll of which film you think is the best (which always ends up as a showdown between ‘A New Hope’ and ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ anyways), I am curious to know what most people think is the WORST.

Due to the max. number of options for poll creation (10), I limited the list to live action theatrical releases only, so the animated ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ as well as the made-for-TV movies ‘Star Wars Holiday Special,’ ‘The Ewok Adventure,’ and ‘Ewoks: The Battle for Endor’ were excluded from the poll (as tempting as it was to include these all as options). Because there are 11 live action theatrical releases, I combined ‘A New Hope’ and ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ as one option, as I figured they wouldn’t get much votes either way.

No contest, Attack of the Clones! The entire prequel trilogy really showed that everyone in the cast was acting against blue screens (almost) the whole time, but Episode II had even worse examples of it. Especially coming from Natalie Portman, who has proven to be quite a gifted actress over the years (even won an Oscar to prove it). Yet, as she in my opinion literally gave some of the worst line readings in history, you’d be watching her in that movie thinking “There’s no way this girl could’ve ever even been nominated for anything other than a Razzie Award.”

Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are both the worst in my opinion, but I’ll give the edge to Phantom Menace since it feels like it drags on longer. Also Attack of the Clones has Ewan McGregor’s Obi Wan more in focus, and no matter what you think of the prequels, McGregor was undeniably excellent casting.

    I’d rank them like this:

    1. Empire Strikes Back

    2. A New Hope

    3. Return of the Jedi

    4. The Force Awakens

    5. Rogue One

    6. The Last Jedi

    7. Revenge of the Sith

    8. Rise of Skywalker

    9. Attack of the Clones

    10. The Phantom Menace

I still haven’t gotten around to seeing Solo yet.

Since others have ranked them, so will I:

    Masterpieces (10/10)
    1. A New Hope
    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    3. Return of the Jedi

    Great & under-appreciated (9/10)
    4. The Last Jedi

    Very good (8/10)
    5. Revenge of the Sith

    Enjoyable, but overrated (7/10)
    6. The Force Awakens
    7. Rogue One

Not bad, but Alden Ehrenreich is no Harrison Ford (6/10)
    8. Solo

Fun, but dialogue and acting is cringe-worthy. Most of this film felt unnecessary to the overall story arc (6/10)
    9. The Phantom Menace

Plot-holes, bad pacing, characters not used to their full potential (5/10)
    10. The Rise of Skywalker

Boring, horribly acted, poor storytelling (3/10)
    11. Attack of the Clones

Oof, I see this forum is popular with the “prequels R bad” crowd…

    4. The Phantom Menace
    5. The Empire Strikes Back
    6. The Last Jedi
    7. Return of the Jedi
    8. Rogue One
    9. Solo
    10. The Rise of Skywalker
    11. The Force Awakens

Memes don’t make a movie good. The first two prequels are totally lacking in logic and emotion, and most importantly, they’re boring. Revenge of the Sith was a big improvement with several good moments, but it’s still not entirely exempt from the problems of the first two prequels.

I almost withheld a vote as I’ve not yet seen Episode IX, but will soon. As far as I’m concerned, the franchise is completely off the rails, having done so with the second trilogy. Should have stopped after the third movie, aka Episode VI. The absolute worst is Episode I, the fourth movie, with Jar Jar Binks, a character whose role and dialogue treats the five year olds watching as if they’re Village Idiots with IQs the same as their age. Has to be the most obnoxious and annoying movie characters I’ve ever seen in about 3000 movies during the past two decades alone. I wanted to retch before the movie was over and nearly did in Pavlovian Response when he appeared in Episode II (fifth movie).

It’s my hope this franchise is dead and buried with Episode IX and that the investment money goes to something original and creative instead of trying to perform a Lazarus Act on this or some other franchise that has run its course.

Sure, but a sense of composition and political nuance sure do, which the prequel trilogy has in spades. Truly some of the most beautiful images found in cinema history.

The prequels may have politics, but they are definitely not nuanced. And more importantly, they’re just not interesting. Star Wars should be about adventure, not a bunch of senators debating each other.

My bottom three are The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and The Last Jedi. TPM is the absolute worst though and it’s not even close. Between the point where the jedi meet Jar-Jar and the duel with Darth Maul at the end there is almost nothing to enjoy. And I say this as someone who liked the prequels growing up as a kid.
