Rosie Perez was not happy when Anna Paquin won
She was probably in a state of agitation. I’ve heard her tell (quite comically) the story of how she went to the bathroom and then they had shut the doors and wouldn’t let her back in. She had to argue with the ushers that her category was next. They eventually let her in and she got to her seat in time.

ReplyCopy URLApril 27, 2020 at 11:10 am #1203450122Kate Winslet almost seemed on the verge of bitter tears when losing to Helen Hunt. Maybe that was also aided by how Hunt said Dench deserved it more. (Although Winslet now looks back on that performance as bad)
I think people in general tend to misunderstand Winslet reaction when losing to Hunt. If i’m not mistaken she was only 4th in the odds, so I don’t think she expected to win. Dench was the favourite followed by Hunt and Bonham Carter. I think she was just surprised that Hunt won and not Dench. Like you said, even Hunt was surprised that Dench wasn’t the winner.

I don’t know if she’s really nervous that she stood a chance or if she just doesn’t like seeing herself on the monitor.

He was a lock in this category, not my favorite but Alan Arkin was 5th on my list personally. Djimon Hounsou or Jackie Earle Haley should’ve won.

I think Hunt was the heavy favorite to win (she won SAG.) She was just being humble towards Dench. Winslet’s whole run with Titanic was strange. She supposedly hated making the film so much she wasn’t going to promote it. Then it became this phenomenon and she changed her mind and hopped on board with it. I don’t think she’s crying because she lost. She’s just touched by Hunt’s speech.
If she wanted to cry it should have been in 1995 when she won SAG but lost the Oscar to Mira Sorvino.

However, I doubt Scorsese thought he had a chance of winning (given the controversy surrounding the film its a credit to the Academy membership that he was nominated). Probably had something else on his mind at the time.

I wonder if they were all operating under the belief that they were in second, and seeing the frontrunner lose caused them all to realize they were third at best.

I suspect had someone other than Whoopi won she’d feel her odds were stronger to win her category.

People in general were a lot less polished back then. Lots of people say something to the person next to them or react in some way. Now it is all just polite smiles and clapping.
