    #1 – Zellweger win (both)
#2 – Penn (MILK) beats Rourke (THE WRESTLER), but I kinda can cope with this one
#3 – DiCaprio and Nicholson got snubed for THE DEPARTED
#4 – SELMA missing Best Director, Screenplay and Actor
#5 – Keisha Castle-Hughes (WHALE RIDER) steals Johansson’s Best Actress nom for LOST IN TRANSLATION
    #6 – Lupita Nyong’o (US) snubed
#7 – Bigelow misses Best Director for ZERO DARK THIRTY
#8 – How the hell did EIGHT GRADE miss a Best Original Screenplay nomination?
#9 – FIRST MAN misses Best Original Score nod
#10 – I’m still wondering what was so wrong for GONE GIRL to miss Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Editing nods

Cooper really deserved that award, but old white people love Queen. Even as someone who loves Rami’s other work, Bohemian rhapsody’s wins are as close to objectively flawed as you can get with the Oscars. It wasn’t the best in any of its categories and shouldn’t have even been nominated beyond Actor

The movie is honestly a disservice to Queen itself.

Nominating The Lion King for Visual Effects. This just infuriates me to no end.

I loved Gone Girl and wish Julianne Moore had won in a different year so that Rosamund Pike had a chance. She deserved so much more recognition for it.

Roberto Benigni winning Best Actor. I think the fact that Life is Beautiful was as successful as it was is the reason why the Directing branch has such an aversion to actors-turned-directors nowadays.

The Pianist should’ve won Best Picture.

Roberto Benigni winning Best Actor. I think the fact that Life is Beautiful was as successful as it was is the reason why the Directing branch has such an aversion to actors-turned-directors nowadays.

If I can add to this, voters probably dislike nominating a single person in too many categories. The difference with actor-directors is that it’s more obvious when the same person is doing both from the credits alone.

By contrast, was it well publicised that Alfonso Cuaron co-produced, co-wrote and co-edited Gravity in addition to directing? (To me, Roma’s editing snub actually felt like the branch was taking a stand against him doing so much of the work on his own; he won that award for Gravity so I don’t have any other explanation)

There’s a reason why no one has Oscars for both acting and directing. When someone does finally achieve this, I doubt it’ll be for the same film. I don’t believe anyone has even deserved both awards for the same film yet. Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven is the only one I’d consider close.

I’m always surprised when one person (or the Coens) manages to win so many Oscars for a single film. Sweeps can be deserving and some people are simply that talented. But I imagine others will see them as arrogant, with Bong being a notable exception who campaigned very well.

Also to get back on topic: Benigni was exactly the kind of baity win which annoys me. I understand not wanting to give Hanks a third so soon, but Edward Norton should’ve been in the running

I frankly feel Ian McKellan should’ve won for GODS & MONSTERS but Edward Norton would’ve been an easy second place (and good winner) for AMERICAN HISTORY X.

That Roberto Benigni win, which happened in the earliest Oscar year that I followed, has not aged well at all. At the time, even though I was still very young, it did seem like a fun and inspired choice but within a few years I felt like I realized the other contenders were more worthy.

In terms of Best Picture wins, I could go on a rampage of selections I despised so I’ll just keep it within the last 30 years:

    -Dances with Wolves
    -Braveheart
-The English Patient (though I acknowledge the movie is visually stunning and I like the ensemble, particularly Binoche)
    -Gladiator
    -A Beautiful Mind
    -Million Dollar Baby
    -Crash
    -Slumdog Millionaire
    -Green Book

Frankly, I don’t agree with most of the winners but I at least like the films in some capacity. These films just angered me that they pulled it off over a superior film or I couldn’t fathom how better films weren’t even nominated.

Much like Laura Dern this year, I’m still baffled by (perhaps even more so) Sandra Bullock’s domination…especially when Carey Mulligan was right there…and hell, we also had Sidibe and I would’ve rather Streep won a third for playing Julia Child before Thatcher.

    Green Book

    Sam Rockwell in Vice

Anthony Hopkins in The Two Popes

These are very good performances. The ones I despise in this category are Richard Jenkins in The Shape of Water and Bradley Cooper in American Hustle.

Sandra Bullock winning and that horrible made for tv movie getting a Best Pic nod was disgraceful.  Julia Roberts winning for Erin Brockovich.  Most of the “lifetime achievement” (i.e. you are popular in Hollywood) acting Oscars are maddening.

    Gwyneth and Shakespeare in Love.

    Slumdog Millionaire winning.

Gyllenhaal for Night Crawler is prob one of the very worst.

    Brokeback losing.

I agree with the baity win of Life is Beautiful, I also think that movie is somewhat responsible for a lot of people not really being into the whole Oscars thing.

Plus the year before had some bad winners as well, I guess 1997-1998 is possibly the all time low for lead actor and actress winners. Not to mention Rush of Shine! isn’t one of the greats either…
