It’s official: 9.8 millions. worst Oscar ratings in History.
ReplyApril 26, 2021 at 11:51 am #1204229680It was always going to be bad being the year it is. But honestly, the politically-charged nature of recent awards ceremonies is the real reason people are not tuning in. People are so fucking sick of it. There was a poll I saw recently where 41% of respondents of a “why don’t you watch the oscars” poll said politics were the reason. Movies have the ability to touch EVERYBODY, and maybe even change some people’s minds. If you want real change to happen, you’re never going to do that by preaching to the choir. People can smell the virtue signaling bullshit a mile away. Shit, I’m someone who sympathizes with almost everything left of the aisle, and even I’M rolling my fucking eyes half the time. It’s psychology people! Hollywood is so tone-deaf, it’s embarrassing.

I really don’t think that’s the reason. Award show ratings have been down across the board and has been trending downward for quite some time now. Traditional TV ratings are becoming a thing of the past because there are other ways to access these shows. With cable and satellite TV dying and streaming growing, Nielsen will become irrelevant if they don’t start tracking streaming and social media impressions.
I’m pretty sure this was inevitable with or without race relations. And this is post-quarantine, too.

April 26, 2021 at 12:32 pm #1204229789Now we can wait until the next day or later and if someone we love has won we can see their acceptance speech – years ago and not even all that long ago we all had to watch together. Our culture has become so fragmented – hundreds of channels and streaming services, and the political divide has also been a huge factor too. Some of us die-hards will watch no matter what, as I did last night, knowing that none of my actual choices would win (but I was very happy with 3 of the acting winners, and I wasn’t predicting 2 of them to win!).
Another problem I have is with their constant attempts to be “hip and with it” – it doesn’t work! Just do a classy show, for crying out loud!!! Show the clips of the performing nominees! Move the show forward with fluidity and stop with all the stupid banter! Use appropriate music instead of trying to be hip and appeal to an audience you don’t actually have.
ReplyCopy URLApril 26, 2021 at 1:19 pm #1204229906All the movies were irrelevant this year. Why would gp sit down and watch? No movie inspires passion and most haven’t even been watched by them. Plus, the Oscars keep getting endlessly trashed on social media. Americans are done with them.
This. And Oscars only care about small movies these days. The General Public never saw these movies. Oscars need something bigger like Return of the King, Titanic, Gladiator, Killers Of The Flower Moon, The Last Duel, House Of Gucci, Kitbag, etc….

And Soderbergh made an awful night. Worst Oscar telecast ever. Shame on Soderbergh
