It was always going to be bad being the year it is. But honestly, the politically-charged nature of recent awards ceremonies is the real reason people are not tuning in. People are so fucking sick of it. There was a poll I saw recently where 41% of respondents of a “why don’t you watch the oscars” poll said politics were the reason. Movies have the ability to touch EVERYBODY, and maybe even change some people’s minds. If you want real change to happen, you’re never going to do that by preaching to the choir. People can smell the virtue signaling bullshit a mile away. Shit, I’m someone who sympathizes with almost everything left of the aisle, and even I’M rolling my fucking eyes half the time. It’s psychology people! Hollywood is so tone-deaf, it’s embarrassing.

I agree with this… and what the other guy said about dying cable/satellite TV. My buddies couldn’t give a less of a crap about movies/oscars, but they all sure saw that Ricky Gervais Globe speech from 2020.

But that only works for GG. And Ricky Gervais said the truth but he was too cruel like when he said: “You actors worked with real life killers and pedophiles”. It’s the truth but it’s too cruel

The Oscars needs to be less Democrat. In theory, the Oscars are Worldwide. So why the Oscars act like a Democrat ad or anti Trump ad. I’m not American and 99.9% of not Americans don’t care about Trump, Biden, Clintons, Obamas, etc….

No one mentioned Trump this year…

True. But they mentioned BLM a lot. Chauvin verdict. I’m sure most people don’t know about BLM or Chauvin verdict. Too local news

It’s not a “Democrat” show. That’s not the correct wording. The Oscars telecast is an American-produced show in a liberal city and state, so that’s its primary orientation. It can’t help but exist in that form.

And Soderbergh made an awful night. Worst Oscar telecast ever. Shame on Soderbergh

The most boring Oscar ceremony ever, I miss the days when Billy Crystal was the host

They have to make people care about tuning into the Oscars again. Lose the politics as it is very divisive and maybe make the ceremony quicker and snappier. Perhaps stream it on a streaming platform like Netflix or something in addition to on television. I dunno, I am spitballing.

I am sorry for my past behaviour. I am sorry for being a turd. I would like to try and be better.

The Netflix thing is a brilliant idea. Politics is too much to hope for but then they may get flack for being out of touch for not talking about politics.

Something I wanted to mention. The Game Awards has a rating of 83 million compared to the Oscars 9 million. This seems rather weird to me because I think more people (if not just as many) like movies as much as video games so what is that award show doing right and what are the Oscars doing wrong?

I still think they need to get people to care about watching the Oscars again. It used to be a big deal. People still love movies and I think the idea of awarding good movies for their merits is something that people still want to see, but they need to get people to care about sitting through the ceremony again.

Umm the Game Awards were definitely not watched live by 83 million people.

People are not going to tune in live when they can just look at the red carpet pictures online, find out the winners on Twitter, watch the highlights on YouTube whenever it’s convenient for them.

    Not according to this article.

Granted, I may have misread it. I am not perfect, after all.

Granted, I may have misread it. I am not perfect, after all.

“The Game Awards partnered with 40 streaming networks around the world to air the ceremony live. Twitch reached a peak concurrent audience of 2.63 million viewers globally”

Also the max concurrent views were 8 million.

The viewing structure is completely different. The Oscars are broadcast by only 1 network, and most people who track them (including a majority of the people on this server) use alternative streams on pirating sites or other avenues (like I used Locast) which do not count as ratings.

It’s interesting actually. I think one of the reasons for these abysmal ratings is that the cable broadcast structure is so outdated and inaccessible for most people, and getting more so every year. They need to reform the way that people watch. Gone are the days of parking yourselves in front of the TV to watch E! Red Carpet coverage and then tune into ABC with 5 minute ad breaks after every category.
