I kind of think she’d have had an easier time of it than she’ll have this year. I’ll never understand why they let that movie sit on a shelf for a year.

I don’t even know how Frances won with Sally Hawkins and Ronan in the mix. They were both overdue and in popular movies. I’m not talking about quality, of course, cause it rarely matters in awards business and is subjective anyway. It might have been because of the nature of the character Frances was playing.

I always expect the awards to put the overdue factor above all else, but I think sheep mentality may be even stronger. I think Frances would have won even with Close there.

No, I’m honestly doubtful that Close will even get Oscar-nominated this year. She will definitely be her movie’s only Oscar nomination if she gets in, and sometimes those indie films which aren’t popular with the Academy at large miss out on the 1 or 2 nods they are generally expected to still receive for that reason. I know Close is overdue, but sometimes the Academy just doesn’t care if there isn’t enough passion for the role itself like there was with Gary Oldman’s Churchill last year.

It’s a good question, but it’s hard to answer. Every year has its own dynamic so it is hard to imagine how Close’s narrative would have developed last year.
But if I had to answer, i would say no. McDormand is obviously so beloved in the industry to have won in such a strong year. I suppose Close would have been the 5th slot. Or wouldn’t have been nominated at all.

I doubt it people love McDormand too and she went 20 years without winning another Oscar and Three Billboards was way bigger than The Wife is.

No. She wouldn’t have been nominated in the first place. They did good by keeping it to this year so she’ll at least get her 7th nomination. And according to her she doesn’t care about winning or losing so she could lose this one too.

No, she wouldn’t. She would’ve good chances only in a weak year like Julianne Moore in 2014.

No. McDormand is popular among voters. Her movie would have won more were there no backlash.

Not even close. She wouldn’t have deserved to be nominated tbh. McDormand gave a career-best performance.

This year I stan: Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Joanna Kulig, Sam Elliott and Toni Collette (at the moment).

Darling, McDormand was offensive and shouldn’t have won. Let’s forget that happened. period.

LENA HEADEY hasn't got an Emmy for Game of Thrones????? Emmys you need to win her right now!!

Lena Headey ("Game of Thrones") for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

If Lena Headey doesn't win the Emmy, I'm leaving GoldDerby forever.

No, not a chance. There’s a reason why Frances swept ALL major awards (i.e., Golden Globes, SAG, BAFTA, Oscars). Heck, even the BAFTAs chose her over Sally Hawkins! Frances Mcdormand had a Tour De Force performance. Glenn Close was smart to stay out of her way.
