A Christmas Carol is one of the most beloved and adapted Christmas tales of all time. While we could all debate which film adaptation of A Christmas Carol is the best, I thought we’d debate something a little different. Who is your favorite actor to play Ebenezer Scrooge out of all the men who have played him? For me, it’s Michael Caine in The Muppet Christmas Carol. In that film, his casting was absolutely perfect, as he had the look and the voice to fit the role like a glove, probably very close to what Charles Dickens imagined when he first wrote the novel. Patrick Stewart in the 1999 adaptation comes in at a close second. He may not really look like what Dickens imagined, but he makes Scrooge’s transformation wholly believable.

Alistair Sim is a perfect Scrooge. Wonderfully cranky, full of pathos, and his redemption is just so infectious.

Alastair Sim is objectively the best Scrooge, but being such a huge fan of Muppets Christmas Carol, Michael Caine will always be my favorite. The fact that he played Scrooge so straight in such a comedic movie and it still works is a testament to his strength as an actor.
