Has there been a year where you just looked at the list of nominees and thought…most of it just completely sucks? Which year?

Last year sucked, especially for Best Picture. Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody (this especially hurt now considering Rocketman was almost completely shut out), and Vice getting nominated was straight up confounding, considering the amount of great films that could have been nominated (If Beale Street Could Talk, Eighth Grade, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-VerseHereditary).

Oscars 2020: I stan Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, Alan Silvestri, and Dean Deblois.

Emmys 2020: I stan Logan Lerman, Olivia Colman, and David Harbour.

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams stan in general.

In recent memory, maybe last year’s. The Favourite aside, little from that Best Picture lineup stuck with me and the Actor category was historically weak.

    For Your Consideration:

It might be a recency thing, but last year was an abomination. The nominations were horrific, and the wins were almost all worse.

Last year was not a strong or exciting year. I don’t remember being particularly excited by the years The Artist won or Birdman either (2011 and 2014)

Of the recent years I would say 2015, of all the oscar nominees Carol and The Revenant were the only ones i really cared for.

2018. Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice and Green Book are all mediocre. 2015 was also bad. That year was weirdly a forgettable Oscar year.

2011 will always and forever be the dullest year for me. None of the nominees sound exciting on paper.

    The Artist
    The Descendants
    Extremely Loud
    The Help
    Hugo
    Midnight in Paris
    Moneyball
    The Tree of Life
    War Horse

    Boring choices. No exceptions.

I just love movies. And awards.

Agree, this one must be the worst in a long time. The acting nominees were weak as well. Last year was bad but it still had stuff The Favourite, Black Panther or Can You Ever Forgive Me that I rank higher than the 2011 crop…

Gurl, Tree of Life is one of the best nominees in history and definitely not a boring choice. It’s one of the most daring choices the Academy has made, up there with nominating Cries and Whispers and Roma. A nom like that is a win for auteurs.

    The rest are so-so.

Pantheon of acting: Uta / Elizabeth / Richard / Sandy (Virginia Woolf), Bibi / Liv (Persona), Sandrine (La Ceremonie), Brie (Short Term 12), Jodie (Silence of the Lambs), Jodie (Killing Eve), Eva (Penny Dreadful), Timothée (CMBYN), Lupita (Us)

This year, although I may be biased due to it happening two days ago. The noms missed a shit ton of the best this year–Awkwafina, Lopez, Lupita, Egerton, Murphy–and slotted in a lot of dullness–Marriage Story-generally disappointing
