I’d like to create a new section of Gold Derby devoted to the most memorable fashions on the Oscars red carpet. I’d like to divide the choices into different categories or classifications … and then maybe create some ranking games out of them that we can all play. Title your lists as creatively as you wish — most jaw-dropping shocking dresses? What were they thinking? Perfect choices, etc. Go back as far in history as you wish … Tx for pitching in!
If you know anything about the outfits (who the designer is, what year was the outfit worn and my whom) — that would be hugely helpful. Also, potential backstories you may know — or if anybody made notable comments.

Charlize Theron
Audrey Hepburn
Lupita Nyong’o
Daryl Hannah
Winona Ryder
Charlize Theron again
Debbie Allen
Camila Alves (yeah, yeah, she is not an actress but look at her!!)
About worse.. there are way too many. Just to name a few – Bjork (2001), Demi Moore (1989), Gwyneth Paltrow (2002), Rachel Weisz (2019), Angelina Jolie (1999)
ReplyCopy URLAugust 18, 2021 at 11:04 am #1204402823There could be a category of legendary looks that were hated at the time. BBC did a good writeup on Björk’s swan dress earlier this year and its lasting legacy and influence on fashion since then. I remember at the time people thinking she’d literally lost her mind lol.
I’ve also seen Lizzy Gardiner’s self-designed amex dress on some “worst” lists, but I love it as a hilarious sendoff to the frivolity of awards.
And as a gay I’d be remiss not to mention Cher, and the Mackie dress at the ’86 ceremony after being snubbed for her Cannes-winning work in Mask, presenting in one of the most dramatic dresses of the decade. Iconically, before presenting Supporting Actor to Don Ameche, she said “as you can see, I did receive my Academy booklet on how to dress like a serious actress.” 😆

All hail:
Tilda came prepared to win.
Goddess tier ^^
+1 for Lupita in that baby blue *chef kiss, and literally everything Cate Blanchett has ever worn (how is she even possible). And I won’t stand for any swan shaming. Bjork is magick and she well understood the assignment.
