Was The Impossible not Naomi Watts?

Lol what a typo. My runner up that year was Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook. Naomi Watts in The Impossible was my winner.

Depending on my mood that day, I would almost say that Portman was the weakest link on the ballot, when she in fact has probably the baitiest role. Admittedly, my personal take on “Black Swan” can best be summed up by Macbeth: “the tale of an idiot told in sound and fury, signifying nothing.” But what really makes me stay off of Portman’s bandwagon is the irritating pitch at which she holds her performance for 75% of the running time, trying desperately to sell herself as a naive savant while her eyes practically radiate the subliminal message, “I’m smarter than this. I’m smarter than this.” I may be unduly harsh here, but while Portman is stuck in a wonderland nebula of more truly interesting characters, she has little to do but pop her eyes, pipe up in a childish treble, and work herself into a fragile frenzy. Ironically, it is only when Portman finally goes off the deep end and tosses the frightened little girl aside that I am able to relax as a viewer and finally sort-of enjoy the tawdry spectacle of “Black Swan,” for at last, Portman is at least in concert with her erratic vehicle. Portman does everything I suppose she’s supposed to do, but the final frenzy that comes anywhere close to justifying an Oscar nomination to me is simply a case of too little, too late.

This is spot on! This user needs to come back.

I’ll consider since the 90’s, ’cause I’m a 90’s child and I haven’t explore the other decades properly (yet). The ones in bold are the ones who won in real life.

 Kathy Bates, Misery
 Susan Sarandon, Thelma & Louise
 Emma Thompson, Howard’s End
 Holly Hunter, The Piano
 Jessica Lange, Blue Sky
 Elisabeth Shue, Leaving Las Vegas
 Emily Watson, Breaking the Waves
 Judi Dench, Mrs. Brown
 Fernanda Montenegro, Central Station
 Hillary Swank, Boys Don’t Cry

Ellen Burstyn, Requiem for a Dream
 Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge!
 Julianne Moore, Far from Heaven
 Charlize Theron, Monster
Kate Winslet, The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind
 Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada
Marion Cotillard, La vie en rose
Kate Winslet, The Reader (should have been for Revolutionary Road instead)
 Gabourey Sidibe, Precious

 Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Emmanuelle Riva, Amour (or maybe Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty, but I’m also okay with Lawrence with Silver Linings Playbook)
 Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
 Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
 Brie Larson, Room
Natalie Portman, Jackie (or Huppert for Elle, would also be a better pick than the actual winner Emma Stone for La La Land)
Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
 Olivia Colman, The Favourite
 Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
