    Jean RENOIR

    Alfred HITCHCOCK

    OZU Yasuhiro

    MIZOGUCHI Kenji

    John FORD

Though all were great technicians, ultimately what elevates them all is the humanity in all of there work (with the exception somewhat of Hitchcock, who exhibited it, but more deeply buried within his technical wizardwy). All also, not incidently, started in the silent era, and all made films at least into the 1950s, the greatest decade for film.

Currently working, off the top of my head:

    Abbas KIAROSTAMI

    HOU Hsiao-hsien

    Jean-Luc GODARD

    Lars VON TRIER

    Agnes VARDA

At his best (Days of Heaven) Terrence Malick would rate, but I keep being disappointed, so I hope for a comeback. Clint Eastwood’s recent work disqualifies him. David Fincher has made one film I love, but that one was a revelation, so I look forward to him in the future.

    Park Chan-Wook (Oldboy)

    Lee Chang-dong (Poetry)

    Claire Denis (Beau Travail)

    Lucrecia Martel (The Headless Woman)

    Quentin Tarantino (Jackie Brown)

Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood)

    I’m, no doubt, forgetting some.

    Very hard…

Currently working (in no particular order):

    Alfonso Cuaron

    Pedro Almodovar

    Steven Spielberg

    Martin Scorsese

    Quentin Tarantino

    Brad Bird

    Kathryn Bigelow

    Christopher Nolan

    David Fincher

    Paul Thomas Anderson

Those are just 10 that immediately come to mind. There’s many more.

I somehow forgot Roman Polanski (Rosemary’s Baby). Looking at these lists is encouraging (lots of good directors still working). No, there isn’t a Hawks or Lang of the day, but there are still many talented people.
