lmfao golden hour was literally sonically different from any country artist I’ve heard and out of her discography. The album was very unique , the lyrics , the production was all A+. Obviously didn’t listen to the album well enough.
No one said it wasn’t great. But it was safe and middle of road.October 8, 2019 at 8:29 pm #1203128641
Safe music = non political? Just saying, there’s no such a thing as safe music – just in awards shows that can be true. Still, music is ALSO about politics, not only that. Adele, Gaga, Lorde, Beyoncé and many others mainstream acts position were just put that way to create buzz.
In the end of the day they just tried to sound cool with this list and even so they failed hard. Blonde #1? Wtf, even with Channel Orange I wouldn’t agree, imagine with Blonde. Again: a total joke.
No. Safe music is easy-listening AC songs that haven’t pushed any boundaries in the artist’s discography or in the musical landscape.
All of the critically acclaimed albums by popstars share one thing in common: they are pushing the artist’s sound. Whether that is Beyoncé making a personal concept album about her flawed celebrity relationship, or Ariana exposing her public life and insecurities very blatantly and getting in the studio with an eclectic hip hop producer, or Taylor Swift changing lanes from Country to Pop. All of those albums, in some way, shape or form, are interesting.
Adele makes great music, but there’s nothing to analyze or chatter or talk about. 19 is a collection of good ballads, 21 is a collection of great ballads, and 25 is a collection of mid-tier ballads. There’s no artistic evolution.
Again -in terms of quality, Adele is probably better than a bunch of those people on those lists. But simply said, there’s just nothing new or interesting to say about her – and that factors in the critic’s perception of an album. She’ll keep getting 75-79 MC scores until there’s some type of artistic evolution or risk taken.October 8, 2019 at 9:24 pm #1203128674

her album wasn’t safe ….. in terms of how country music is. She literally went above what most people expects her music to sound which increased her artistic ability. If she wanted to make a safe album she would’ve did another Pageant Material ……

Adele’s going to show up on other lists. She’s no Celine Dion. She has some critical clout.October 8, 2019 at 10:06 pm #1203128704
I would’ve also liked to see Honeymoon. Such a lovely album that is highly underrated, even within the fandom.October 8, 2019 at 10:47 pm #1203128734
adele will be on rolling stone’s list because they’re still hung up on the idea that they are in charge of pop culture’s apotheosis, and she has been one of their most constant subjects of glorification
Adele, Beyonce and Taylor will be ranked high on Rolling Stone.
Expected NME to kiss Arctic Monkeys and The 1975 their ass as usualOctober 8, 2019 at 10:51 pm #1203128737
Love it the critics praised The Weeknd’s earlier project (House of Balloons). He deserved more success than Bruno imoOctober 8, 2019 at 10:56 pm #1203128741

Bruno is one of the best and successful R&B singers of our decade. I might not agree with his AOTY win against Lorde and Kendrick, but he definitely deserves his fame.

Anti is finally being understood as a masterpiece . Finally.
Looking at some of those lists and comparing with Grammy wins is interesting.
ANTi is Top 10 on UPROXX and #12 on Pitchfork. Melodrama is #6 on UPROXX (best from 2017) and #14 on Pitchfork (also best from 2017). Kendrick Lamar with good kid m.A.A.d city being #1 on UPROXX and also Top 20 on Pitchfork (which is great when you consider he has 2 albums with higher scores on Metacritic). No Grammy wins for any of those albums.
In some respects I think they are posting these lists too early.
Didn’t Nick Cave just release a very highly acclaimed album? The review score might drop back a bit after we get another 10-15 reviews, but it’s reasonable to think it might get a place in a list of 200 albums. Same goes for Angel Olsen.October 8, 2019 at 11:54 pm #1203128766

Pitchfork didn’t even put in the modern masterpiece Skeleton Tree in their album list, I feel like even if it had been eligible it wouldn’t have been nominated.
For Your Consideration:
Best Picture: Weathering With You, Parasite, The Lighthouse
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You, Promare
Best International Film: Weathering With You, ParasiteOctober 9, 2019 at 4:48 am #1203128967
Pitchfork has never ruled 21 either. If 25 got 7.1, then I don’t see how 21 wouldn’t have gotten higher than that. And “safe” isn’t totally the reason for the Adele exclusion when they praised “Someone Like You” and “When We Were Young.”October 9, 2019 at 4:55 am #1203128992
Pauly said they’re not done with the list ….. bc their gonna re edit at the end of the year. Which was stupid to even do it rn
