I listened to H.E.R’s album for the first time today. Hard Place is really good, but as a whole I’m….whelmed? It was really nothing special, and in terms of R&B albums I actually much prefer Ella Mai’s. The support for H.E.R is such a mystery, I would love to know who on the panel is rallying for her so hard… and why

H.E.R.’s support is no mystery. She’s a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist who is well-versed in not only R&B/Soul, but Gospel, Pop, Hip Hop and Rock. Sometimes being a multi-talented ingenue is enough to be considered in the industry. Her nominations are well-earned. She took no one else’s spot.

Can Big Thief win in best alternative? They seem more in their prime than Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, James Blake and Thom Yorke. My secondary choice in terms of personal preference would be Thom Yorke.

I’m honestly starting to miss the 5 nominee lineup.

Nominations are becoming too cheap and there are too many fillers now.

Like a nomination in the GF should be an honor in itself. It’s no longer the case. Anyone can get them now.

kind of disagree though… there is literally so much more music being released now than years before. I think it’s still a huge honor because the competition and amount of songs is more than ever. I don’t mind the 8+ rule, but maybe it’d be better in the genre categories rather than the general field? Idk

Will Billie be the first artist to sweep the general field since Christopher Cross? Could very well happen. Norah Jones would’ve done it if she had written Don’t Know Why. Billie is a lock for Album and New Artist. I’d say Bad Guy wins either Record or Song or both. I wouldn’t be surprised if Record or Song does her in.

I think they wanted to make it harder to predict who would win the genre categories. Because normally if you had an album of the year or record of the year nomination you would of won the genre album, or genre vocal performance. By putting 8 nominations in the general fields, it makes it harder to guess who will win the genre category.

I’m listening to the new Tinashe album and this is exactly the music I wish she had been making through all these years while she was having drama with her label. She is so much better than Summer Walker.

does anyone happen to find this year’s complete Grammy nominations list?
i mean, with the additional information if a nominated song got it for a track version (from eligible album) or a single version (like here: https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/grammys/8489045/2019-grammy-nominees-full-list)

    My personal ranking:

Album of the Year: (this category is such “BARF!” for me)

    1. Billie Eilish – When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go (probably the best in contention, but it kinda pales compared to AoTY contenders we had this decade).
    2. Vampire Weekend – Father of the Bride (meh but whatever)

    The rest is meh…

    Record of the Year:

    1. Post Malone & Swae Lee – Sunflower
    2. Billie Eilish – Bad Guy
    3. H.E.R – Hard Place
    4. Lizzo – Truth Hurts

    The rest is meh

    Song of the Year:

    1. Tanya Tucker – Bring My Flowers Now (really the most moving and beautiful song in contention here, this was a very nice surprise)
    2. Lady Gaga – Always Remember Us This Way
    3. H.E.R – Hard Place
    4. Taylor Swift – Lover
    5. Lewis Capaldi – Someone You Loved

The rest is not SoTY material

The committee really needs to scale it down to 5 nominees again, or maybe leave it at 8 for AoTY only, and make a DISTINCTION between Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

This is how it should’ve been:

    Record of the Year:
    1. Lizzo – Truth Hurts
    2. Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus – Old Town Road
    3. Billie Eilish – Bad Guy
    4. Post Malone & Swae Lee – Sunflower
    5. Ariana Grande – 7 Rings
These are the records that can be recognized for their vocals and production.

    Song of the year:
    1. Tanya Tucker – Bring My Flowers Now
    2. Lady Gaga – Always Remember Us This Way
    3. H.E.R – Hard Place
    4. Taylor Swift – Lover
    5. Lewis Capaldi – Someone You Loved

And these are the songs that are stronger in songwriting than production. “Truth Hurts” and “Bad Guy” has no business being in SoTY. And it’s gonna suck again, because a song with meh lyrics will win SoTY.

I really hate that they have similar nominees in SOTY and ROTY. It’s not the f*cking same.
You’re right, M. Though I prefer to have 8 nominees.

I agree. I hated the expanded nominee lineup since the beginning. It feels so unnecessary.

Guys let’s play a game, please. For these past two years, name the 5 nominees who would remain had the 8-nominee lineup idea never existed. (Note: you CAN replace a nominee or winner entirely if you somehow think that would result, but please state why, or just don’t do that at all).
