It looks like they bent the rules for Lizzo. Most likely it will come down to a competition between Billie Eilish and Lizzo, with perhaps a late challenge from Lewis Capaldi, depending on how well “Someone You Loved” does over the next few weeks.

Getting a second Top 10 will help Lil Nas X a lot (no longer a one hit wonder) and should help secure a nomination. Maggie Rogers might be one of my favourites, but I don’t really know how well regarded she is by Grammy voters.

Of course there was rule bending.

Cuz I Love You (Deluxe) – 14 tracks
Big GRRRL Small World – 12 tracks
    Lizzobangers – 14 tracks
Coconut Oil EP – 6 tracks

That’s just from a quick scroll down her Spotify and not even looking at collabs and other random songs. No big deal as they seem to change the interpretation every year depending on who they want on the show, so why should this year be any different.

Billie Eilish, Lizzo, and Maggie Rogers are locks to me, and I think the other 5 spots will come down to this group:

    Lewis Capaldi
    Tyler Childers
    Ari Lennox
    Megan Thee Stallion
    Rosalía
    Calum Scott
    Summer Walker
    Weyes Blood
    Tierra Whack
    Jamila Woods
    YBN Cordae
    Yola

(No, I don’t think Lil Nas X is getting in here, don’t @ me about that.)

Calum Scott is here if only because “You Are the Reason” has seen a recent resurgence in sales.

At present, we’re told, a research team tabulates a potential nominee’s releases to determine whether an artist is in or out. The first rule is three albums—more than that, the current rules state, and you’re not a new artist. But the total tracks on those three can exceed the much-talked-about 30-song limit. It’s when there are singles or other releases beyond the three albums, we’re told, that the song limit can be used to disqualify.

Insiders report that there is some wiggle room and the above is subject to the committee’s discretion. But it’s said that no one is particularly happy with how the sausage is made—and that next time around we could be looking at changes to the recipe.

As long as ROSALÍA is nominated, I will be happy. The fact that the Grammy telecast producer has already been in talks with her to perform on the show gives me hope that she can pull off this nomination!

Of course I also want to see Lizzo, Billie and Lewis nominated along with Megan Thee Stallion!

Don’t really care about anyone else as long as those 5 make it.

Remember when I asked about the 30 singles vs. tracks thing?

The Grammys will never get it straight forward with BNA. Smh.

Every time they make a rule change, it makes the category more confusing. lmao

They not only bent the rules for Lizzo but also for Weyes Blood. (kinda).

With Lizzo and Weyes Blood, it looks like they didn’t count indie or self-released albums, which is something they have also done for Meghan Trainor and Kacey Musgraves, among others.

They should award a Best New Artist make up award for Whitney Houston.

If I picked… I’d bend the rules and have 15 nominees. It’s a great year for BNA.

    Tyler Childers
    City Girls
    Clairo
    Billie Eilish
    Joji
    Ari Lennox
    Lizzo
    Maggie Rogers
    Megan Thee Stallion
    Rosalía
    Shura
    Summer Walker
    Weyes Blood
    Tierra Whack
    Jamila Woods
