Why is ranked voting system better?

The Oscars have a somewhat complicated voting process. The use a ranked ballot, and they tabulate the vote then if none of the films are ranked #1 by more than 50% of voters, they eliminate the film that is ranked #1 by the least number of voters. They repeat this process until one film has at least 50% of the #1 votes.

The benefit of this ballot is that currently if someone’s vote is for H.E.R., then their vote is completely wasted. This means that voters are currently encouraged to only vote for a candidate that they feel has a realistic chance of winning, so as not to waste their vote. Under a preferential ballot, someone can rank H.E.R. first, then after H.E.R. is eliminated then their vote would be transferred to their second ranked pick. It means that artists need to not only winning 1st ranked votes, but also winning 2nd and 3rd ranked votes.

Taylor just mentioned Lana’s NFR! in her BB Women Of The Decade speech, as a way to explain how Lana overcame criticism from the media, she literally mentioned its AOTY nomination. Supposedly the Grammy president is president as well as some of the academy, could be wrong.

Ranked voting system is better because the winner is really a general consensus and not just a biased pick.

Lets take Pop Solo for instance.

Some outliers may Rank Billie Eilish as 1st Pick and have Beyonce as Last.

Then there may be people who do the reverse have Beyonce first and Billie dead last.

Who benefits from this? Ariana, Lizzo and Taylor.

If Lizzo is consistent and stays between 2nd -3rd place on every ballot.. then it’s safe to say that the voting bloc has her ranked as a Likely winner.

Guys, I hate to break it to you, but Lana Del Rey is just not happening.

She is actually far ahead of many other artists in the alphabetical order (D) and the fact they nominated The Gift over her, shows that there’s simply no support for her this year in the Academy.

For H.E.R you could argue she missed a genre nomination because the committee shut her out to not have her win twice in a row, but for Lana there’s just no excuse for missing Pop Vocal Album other than lack of support among the voters.

Doesn’t mean we don’t want her to win. It’s just the truth.

Critics are literally pushing super hard for Lana’s album in their year end’s lists. She has already made the top one of various lists, ranked the first place in the score yard of both Metacritic and Albumoftheyear.org and is far and ahead the second place on both lists.
But at the same time, Billie’s album also has unexpectedly risen up significantly too, showing a way stronger critics’ support than its average Metascore may indicate. I think she is the winner this year!

I know Lana Del Rey’s support from the voters is likely weak, but she’s receiving overwhelming support from a side of the music industry that has previously tried to tear her down and destroy her career. It means something.

You all are so severely underestimating Lana. Yeah pop voters love Beyonce, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, Billie, Ariana etc. These types of pop albums never win AOTY because ONLY pop voters like these albums. Lana lost the pop nomination because she didn’t release a pop album, so the pop voters voted for actual pop albums instead. If she had released an actual pop album, she probably would have gotten the pop nomination but missed the AOTY nomination. So Lana lost the pop voters but she gained everyone else. She has huge and passionate support coming from  the entire industry.
