We are approaching the end of 2020 so expecting a lot of year-end lists in upcoming weeks. I’ll use two sources (AOTY and Metacritic) although I prefer the former since Metacritic’s methodology is quite ridiculous and unfair.
AOTY’s methodology :
- 1st place: 10 points
- 2nd place: 8 points
- 3rd place: 6 points
- Top 10: 5 points
- Top 25: 3 points
- Other : 1 point
- Unranked list : Point based on size of list
Metacritic’s methodology :
- 1st place: 3 points
- 2nd place: 2 points
- 3rd-10th/unranked list of 10 or fewer albums: 1 point
- Unranked list of 11-20 albums: 0.5 point

People don’t like it when some of us choose to be a little more discerning and don’t shower every possibility under the sun with at least faint praise. lol

Which is dumb considering the amount of surprise drops we get in November/December. But everyone wants their shit to be seen first. And it seems some publications aim to have any effect on the Grammys.
I’m expecting Fetch the Bolt Cutters, Run the Jewels 4, Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, Punisher and Forklore to be the top five, in that order. Future Nostalgia, What’s Your Pleasure, and Rough and Rowdy Ways might have a chance to crack the top five as well. Interested in seeing where SAWAYAMA and After Hours end up. Also interested in seeing how many hip-hop and R&B albums are in the top 30. There’s a lot of albums hip-hop and R&B albums with decent acclaim but not sure how many can crack enough top 20’s.
I’m thinking some publications will “punish” Fetch the Bolt Cutters for getting 98 on MC and that 10 from Pitchfork. But it should still be a pretty safe number 1.

ReplyCopy URLNovember 9, 2020 at 10:26 pm #1203825742I’m doubting Forklore will get into enough top 5’s to end up in the top 3. But I guess I wouldn’t be surprised.
Despite its 89 on MC, SAWAYAMA really struggled in the mid-year lists, which is why I’m intrigued by where it will land.
RTJ4 was easily 2nd in the mid-year lists. And it’s the only obvious hip-hop album for critics to choose from. It’s also overtly political, which may make a difference in the lists this year. I feel pretty confident in FTBC and RTJ4 being 1 and 2.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 9, 2020 at 10:30 pm #1203825750Just some thoughts:
I feel like folklore could end up between 4-10. Don’t see it much higher or lower. Fiona will be number 1 and RTJ should easily be top 3. Hoping Phoebe and Rina can make top 10 (doubtful for the latter, unfortunately). Abel will also probably be top 10, Dua around 12-9?

It doesn’t seem like a critical fave this year. And it only appeared on a few mid-year lists. But its success may make a difference.
Dua will crack a decent amount of top 10s, probably not many top 5’s outside of a few super mainstream publications. I could see her between 4-9. But I do think she’ll manage to be in the top 10.
