Fiona, RTJ, Dylan and Taylor will likely be top 4. I think Dua will also be in the top 10.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 10, 2020 at 5:59 am #1203826032Fiona, RTJ4 and Punisher will likely be the top 3, followed by Folklore and Perfume Genius in the top 5 and Bob Dylan in the top 10. Future Nosstalgia will get a couple of top 10-20s and some top 5s from British publications, which should be enough for a top 10-15.
After Hours while not being a critical fave it may be favored for the award season push (I definitely see r&b/hip hop publications like HipHopDX and Complex ranking it high), the era work overall and The Weeknd’s popularity this year – as well the fact that he managed to mix his eariler work with his mainstream sound, as reviewers pointed out – so a top 20 is pretty reasonable.
Sawayama is this year’s thank u next – critically acclaimed in the start but failing to make high spots in the end. It barely made mid-year rankings, that should be indicative.

Best progressive R&B album : Ungodly HourNovember 12, 2020 at 3:44 am #1203831100What’s happening?! I’m liking these lists so far. Laura Marling once again in top 10, and Fleet Foxes that high. But it’s because British lists are usually better then Americans’. Last year, I remember liking those aggregators’ results less and less with the passing of the weeks.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 12, 2020 at 3:51 am #1203831108I mean, Laura Marling will probably be in the top 15 of the aggregated. So, there’s that. Fleet Foxes should do well too. But American critics do seem semi over the band despite the still overall good reviews.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 12, 2020 at 4:40 am #1203831157They gave folklore an excellent 9, one of the highest score of 2020 yet the album missed the list. RTJ4 and Ohms also nowhere to be found despite solid 8.

Best progressive R&B album : Ungodly HourNovember 12, 2020 at 4:55 am #1203831166There are definitely gonna be a handful of publications that will mark down FTBC and RTJ4 for being as widely acclaimed and talked about as they are. Forklore is likely gonna be all over the place. It’ll be in a lot of top 10s but also entirely miss a good deal of lists, partly because some just don’t like it that much but also because of its MC score and Swift’s mainstream/social media popularity.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 12, 2020 at 5:06 am #1203831176It looks like Phoebe, Laura and Bob are leading the pack but yeah this is too early. MOJO’s list will be revealed in a few days and once again it looks like Laura and Bob will make another appearances, and Taylor is coming too.
THE BEST OF 2020 The 75 best new albums, 20 best reissues, best music films, books and events from a singular year, plus cameos from Cornershop, Paul Weller, Moses Sumney, Laura Marling, Mark Lanegan, Taylor Swift, Bob Dylan, Prince and more!

Best progressive R&B album : Ungodly HourNovember 12, 2020 at 5:13 am #1203831182Laura is a Brit and has always been really popular with critics there. I’m not expecting the love to sustain, especially once the lists become American centric and more mainstream/populist. Though, as I said, I do expect her to end up in the top 15. I’m also not expecting Fiona to appear that high in most British publications, outside of The Gaurdian and The Independent. They’ve never really loved her in Europe, and the weakest reviews for FTBC mostly came from there. I’m pretty sure Bob will end up in the top five aggregated lists. A lot of American publications are gonna leave him out of their top ten. But he’ll also probably make enough.
If Rina doesn’t get plenty of love from the European publications she may struggle to end up in the top 20 of the aggregated lists. That will be fairly odd for an album that will likely be in the top ten scores on MC and AOTY and an album that’s gotten a good amount of social media love.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 12, 2020 at 7:09 am #1203831355Since for these critics November and December don’t exist they should include late November/December releases from the previous year (2019)
Imagine when something highly acclaimed comes in December like when BEYONCÉ was released in mid-December of 2013
ReplyCopy URLNovember 12, 2020 at 7:32 am #1203831426A lot of publications counted BEYONCE on their lists the following year. Some lists released in late December and in January shoehorned her in. But a lot of publications, especially Brit based, be desperate to get their lists out first. I guess that’s because they know the American based publications will get more attention.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 13, 2020 at 6:57 pm #1203835766Bored so I’m going to try and predict what the top ten albums will be once everything is said and done with these lists.

MOJO and Uncut usually ahead of other publications since they have early access to new music sometimes months prior to official release. Unless we are talking about surprise releases.
