Evermore hasn’t even been out for two weeks and it’s already at 22 y’all—
Evermore definitely riding on folklore’s hype. If she released the album during early November, it will make it into many year-end lists alongside with folklore, just similar situation with Sault “Untitled (Black Is)/Rise)” or Big Thief “U.F.OF./Two Hands”

Yeah, I think folklore will overtake RTJ4 in the next update considering they haven’t add Insider and Earbuddy lists.

ReplyCopy URLDecember 26, 2020 at 1:46 am #1203945590I don’t really get what AOTY is doing. If you only want to count the most reputable sources of music journalism, that’s fine. But the lists that they’re deciding to leave off are fairly random. I don’t really love MC’s style of just counting every damn thing. But at least they don’t seem like they’re moving with biases.
RTJ4’s is clearly the hip-hop album critics decided to back this year. There doesn’t seem to be much genuine passion behind it. Which is why it falling is appropriate. However, it’s not gonna go anywhere on AOTY.

oh 100%. There are so many reputable publications that have been ignored.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 26, 2020 at 6:46 am #1203945876I wouldn’t say that they are leaving out “reputable” sources, but they are including so many random publications that there doesn’t seem to be any consistent criteria. So, some people that they are leaving out doesn’t really make sense. Really, if we’re only including respected publications that people look to for music journalism then maybe only like 70-80 publications should be included in any of this.

Best progressive R&B album : Ungodly HourDecember 27, 2020 at 8:20 pm #1203948670I truly wonder what the metascore/decade end lists would look like had folklore been released by a relatively unknown, niche artist like phoebe bridgers.
Would it do better, since snobbish magazines would be more inclined to rate it highly?
Or would it do slightly worse, since the 180 Taylor pulled really drew in the critical attention?

i was thinking about this too … on one hand snobbish critics like Pitchfork would have definitely rated it higher if it was by some niche indie artist but Taylor’s genre change drew in a lot of headlines and attention too. it made the record seem more impressive and exciting considering it was an entirely new sound for her and made in a couple of months in isolation, so i definitely believe this has factored into the glowing reviews for folklore.

It probably will get higher score. The only critic that I’ve seen tend to give good score for the sake of Taylor’s name is Rolling Stone although they don’t hesitate to give lower just like they did for Red.
But many critics always put their expectation higher when it comes to Taylor’s albums. The New York Times dragged folklore, saying it wasn’t pop enough lol. Some critics unhappy with her new direction but just wait when they start switching their opinion for upcoming years.
