I truly wonder what the metascore/decade end lists would look like had folklore been released by a relatively unknown, niche artist like phoebe bridgers. Would it do better, since snobbish magazines would be more inclined to rate it highly? Or would it do slightly worse, since the 180 Taylor pulled really drew in the critical attention?

Year end lists often favour the better known artists, so that gives folklore an advantage. Having said that, phoebe bridgers is also well known to music critics, so she isn’t a good example of an “unknown” artist.

Here is a better example, remember 2019 when British rapper Little Simz released Grey Area, which scored 91 on metacritic – one of the most acclaimed albums of the year.

In the year end lists, it was #18 with metacritic and #15 with AOTY.org. The album was great, but it got overlooked and better known artists made the Top 10.

Swift has definitely benefitted from her name when it comes to these lists. It’s a very good album. But it’s also similar to many indie-folk-pop albums that have been released in recent years. It’s a more standout work if you haven’t heard all those albums. The big selling point of Folklore is that it’s so different from the rest of Swift’s more “commercial” catalog. While a lot of these publications that are being counted lean towards generally mainstream or known musicians, which once again, helps Swift.

i disagree lmao. Yes 100% most mainstream publications like us weekly or people definitely benefit taylor but at the same time there are countless publications who are extremely snobby with their choices and would never even dream of putting folklore in the list, even top 100 lists. i’ve seen so many lists that are super niche and only include indie artists or at least non-mainstream artists. these lists have definitely been in favour of ftbc, punisher and rtj4. i think it’s equally if not more impressive that such a polarising artist like taylor has made it to top 3/4 overall. regardless of how good an album she releases, she will have mainstream publications back her but also a lot of indie/non-mainstream publications that will always shun her.

Folklore has done solid when it comes to more “hipster” and “snobby” publications. And it’s done pretty damn well when it comes to more mainstream and star-loving publications. You can’t have it all. The question is if you think Swift’s name and the narrative for the album is beneficial to her with these lists. And overall, I think yes. There’s a good chance an album like Folklore would have gotten the Waxahatchee or Song For Our Daughter treatment if Swift’s name wasn’t attached to it aka good, well executed folky/indie/rock album that isn’t by a big enough name and doesn’t have enough narrative to appeal to enough “commercial” publications but also isn’t daring or idiosyncratic enough for the more “hipster” publications to put in their top 3. The album has done slightly better with these lists than I expected. So, Swift fans can’t complain.

I agree that Swift fans should complain. It’s found really well and I think she is getting tons of Year end lists and I think she will easily get the highest placement she ever has had on any combined list ever

Being #4 on AOTY.org with 110 lists is amazing.

Taylor never had this level of acclaim in her career, also some niche publications include folklore in lower placements than would never put a TS album in their lists in the past.

If we look at metacritic, the clear picture is that Folklore is the ~third most acclaimed album of 2020.

I feel like these things cancel each other out, so maybe its reception would be the same then
