I never expected After Hours to do well in the year-end lists. I figured it’d be lucky to crack the aggregated top 20. Now, it looks like it’d be lucky to crack the 40. It already did fairly poor in the mid-year lists outside of the more “urban” leaning publications. And while it got overall solid reviews, there wasn’t much passion in those reviews.
It was predicted for all those Grammy noms based off of “Blinding Lights” being the biggest single of year, the good sales for the album, the aggressive promoting and campaigning, the album being solidly reviewed and that The Weeknd has previously garnered major noms. It didn’t have much at all to do with acclaim.

But idk if all of these will be included on the aggregate list.

They should be. AOTY counts even People Magazine.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 1, 2020 at 9:06 am #1203887019I figured there was no way around Fiona, Run the Jewels and Phoebe being 1, 2 and 3. I figured Folklore was gonna be in a battle to get a top five spot (though there’s still plenty of counted lists to go).
What’s Your Pleasure is underperforming. So is Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, but it’ll still likely land in the top 8.

AOTY count around 130+ lists, Metacritic are even bigger around 180+ lists

Best progressive R&B album : Ungodly HourDecember 1, 2020 at 9:12 am #1203887044Looking at last year’s aggregate list, AOTY included like every random site that had a ranking, many of those weren’t even music-related in anyway. So there really isn’t a reason not to include those lists.
Metacritic I think is a little more selective, but AOTY includes everyone on the face of earth.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 1, 2020 at 9:15 am #1203887057I think both sites will be slightly more selective this year. Neither site adds as many reviews as they used to. I’m thinking 100-120 lists will be counted for both. But there will still be some random inclusions and non-inclusions.
