Could someone break down the difference between Traditional R&B & Straight R&B?
In some cases it’s obvious to differentiate with some songs and sometimes it isn’t for me.
It’s very hard to differentiate sometimes but I’d say the main thing is Production. Songs that are more contemporary are moreso leaning towards hip hop beats and faster uptempos while traditional R&B is focused more on the delivery. Think – Blues, Soul, Jazz (sometimes) elements.
A stark comparison would be Andra Day vs. Summer Walker.July 25, 2021 at 9:39 am #1204362192

I think Planet HER will be in Pop like Hot PinkJuly 25, 2021 at 4:40 pm #1204362624
Get real! Doja Cat’s Planet Her is NOT happening in Best Progressive R&B Album. That crap will be submitted to Best Pop Vocal Album.July 25, 2021 at 8:10 pm #1204362802
Is “Body” eligible? That song is old news.July 25, 2021 at 8:53 pm #1204362857
Ungodly Hour is still eligible? Sorry, this is my first time on the Grammy forums.July 25, 2021 at 11:36 pm #1204363032
Hey. For this year, no unfortunately. I think “Ungodly Hour” by Chloe x Halle have been nominated this past Grammy season. (Grammys 2020/2021) 63rd Grammys. Chloe x Halle also received the following nominations: 63RD ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS (2020)
BEST TRADITIONAL R&B PERFORMANCE
- Wonder What She Thinks Of Me
BEST PROGRESSIVE R&B ALBUM
- Ungodly Hour
Thank you! I ask only because someone above has Ungodly Hour in their predictions for this year and I’m very unfamiliar with the eligibility rules for the Grammys, as it’s my first time predicting it, so I was unsure if I was uninformed on if there were any rules saying Ungodly Hour could compete again.July 25, 2021 at 11:39 pm #1204363034

Yes, it is. Tracks from Grammy nominated albums are eligible only the year after nominated, provided the album didn’t win. If the album did win, the track is only eligible if it’s an alternate version that’s not on the Grammy winning version of the album, only in ROTY + performance categories (hence why Levitating is eligible, for example).
FYC - Lil Nas X
MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) - ROTY, SOTY, Best Pop Solo Perf., Best Music Video
INDUSTRY BABY - Best Melodic Rap Perf., Best Rap Song
MONTERO - AOTY, Best Pop Vocal AlbumJuly 26, 2021 at 1:20 am #1204363127
Get real! Jazmine Sullivan will NOT compete in Best Progressive R&B Album. She will be submitted to Best R&B Album.July 26, 2021 at 7:13 am #1204363548
Back of My Mind is more Progressive than Heaux Tales. The themes Jazmine explores aren’t traditional but the music is.July 26, 2021 at 8:10 am #1204363641

I disagree. I think H.E.R has like 5 contemporary R&B records on her album but when you take into account the album’s length, that’s not even 30% of the album. I think Jazmine in Progressive is a safe bet. Songs like Put It Down, The Other Side, Price Tags etc are not traditional.July 26, 2021 at 8:12 am #1204363643

She released it as a single late last year. And the video was released this year. It’s definitely a long shot but I think Summer was so disrespected last year that I’m Hoping they give her a makeup nomination somewhere.July 26, 2021 at 8:26 am #1204363676
The R&B committee did Summer Walker dirty. She deserved a nomination for Over It.July 26, 2021 at 6:40 pm #1204364757

Lol. Heaux Tales is definitely less contemporary than Back of My Mind.July 26, 2021 at 6:45 pm #1204364765
Yeah, I still have ‘Heaux Tales’ in Best Progressive R&B Album… But then again, I’m fighting myself with this one because ’24k Magic’ won Best R&B Album and I think it should’ve been in Progressive R&B. We’ll have to wait and see where it is submitted.
