Bieber getting in R&B would be a slap in the face to actual R&B artists. The screening committee would send him to Pop where he belongs.
May 3, 2021 at 12:17 pm #1204240970Bieber could be relegated to pop but peaches is a R&B hit and that’s where it should compete.
May 3, 2021 at 12:22 pm #1204240982Get real! Justin Bieber CANNOT happen in R&B. The screening committee will bounce his ass back to Pop.
May 4, 2021 at 5:10 am #1204241928Justin has never been nominated in R&B. However, he has been allowed in the field with Journals, but it wasn’t nominated.
Hence, competed.

(Expecting veterans for the remaining three slots, but I have no idea who?)Jam & Lewis f/ Babyface is doing extremely well on Urban AC. Stevie Wonder also has two songs in contention. I’d never underestimate him.

Would Leave the Door Open be traditional R&B or just R&B performance?
May 27, 2021 at 1:15 pm #1204275424Bieber getting in R&B would be a slap in the face to actual R&B artists.
Why? lol
“Peaches” is an R&B song. No one would be questioning that if you swapped Bieber for Frank Ocean.

Should go Traditional.
I think Jazmine Sullivan’s “Pick Up Your Feelings” will go R&B Performance instead of Trad.

Frank Ocean is an actual R&B artist so of course no one would question it. Bieber is Pop so that’s the field he belongs in. Same with Ariana.
And if you wanna go deeper, why would voters nominate an appropriator with a racist past in a predominately Black genre? Not a good look.
May 27, 2021 at 1:27 pm #1204275448Frank Ocean is an actual R&B artist so of course no one would question it. Bieber is Pop so that’s the field he belongs in. Same with Ariana.
And “Peaches” is an R&B song. Bieber being a pop artist doesn’t mean he can’t do other genres, and if Lizzo and The Weeknd have both WON multiple R&B Grammys, I don’t see what’s so damning about Bieber getting a nom for an R&B song featuring two R&B artists that gets played on R&B radio. IDK why that’s a hard concept to follow when Bieber has long been doing R&B-ish music.
And if you wanna go deeper, why would voters nominate an appropriator with a racist past in a predominately Black genre? Not a good look.
Voters nominated a notorious rapist for Record of the Year 9 months ago (even after a panel screening) and gave Chris Brown a Grammy after a very infamous domestic abuse case against a huge popstar. Not sure why you think they will care about Bieber’s past, especially after he’s pretty much been welcomed back and forgiven by the industry.
May 27, 2021 at 1:38 pm #1204275457First of all, “Peaches” is arguably a Pop song with R&B leanings. So let’s not act like it’s a pure R&B/Soul record in the vein of “Pick Up Your Feelings” or “Leave the Door Open”. This is Justin Bieber we’re talking about. Not Maxwell, D’Angelou or hell even Robin Thicke.
Second of it all, Chris Brown is a BLACK artist who actually makes R&B music. So the comparison is not valid. Bieber is a White Pop act infiltrating the R&B market because it somehow validates his “credibility” among Black audiences. Despite a past of using discriminatory language against said community. Not sure why you’re not understanding that Boz.
May 27, 2021 at 1:41 pm #1204275464…And just because a song features 2 Black R&B artists doesn’t necessarily make it R&B. If that’s the case then Doja Cat should submit “Kiss Me More” to R&B Perf/Song because it features SZA. Lol.
