Just noticed I hadn’t updated my AOTY predictions in the prediction centre since April and looking at them, don’t think I really have to.

Royals, because it completely changed pop for years (Todd In The Shadows, a pretty cool music critic from YouTube had a running joke about it). Old Town Road mixed country with rap in mainstream, by a black gay kid who was on stan twitter, and it’s the longest running #1 of all time. Rolling In The Deep (not Someone Like You) kickstarted the mainstream career of the biggest artist of our generation. I would say Despacito, the biggest non English song since La Macarena, which also opened the floodgates for Spanish speaking artists in America.

Thats a cultural reset. What it says in the tin, a moment that changes culture as we know it. A song being big is not a cultural reset. And 80s/disco inspired songs have been huge for years. The biggest album (not by Adele) in recent years was literally 1989.

I’m so excited I think Folklore will be nominated in Best Engineered Album and Jack Antonoff in Producer of the year and we’ll be off to a good start in the stream

Not sure if we are talking about grammy nommed songs but if not, Gangnam Style is also a cultural reset song. Essentially any song that goes viral tbh.

I don’t think going viral is enough, but I do agree on Gangnam Style. Say So had the potential of being a cultural reset cause it has the same artist singing and doing the rap verse, but at this point the controversy has wasted it.

RIP to the hopes of Jack Antonoff being a double AOTY nominee for Folklore AND Gaslighter.

I have a suspicion The Chicks might underperform or get snubbed completely. 😭

It depends, for ‘Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical’ the award is presented to “the audio engineer(s) on the winning work, not to the artist or performer, except if the artist is also a credited engineer”.

On ‘folklore’, Taylor Swift appears to be listed as a producer, but not an engineer.

On the other hand, Beyonce has a Grammy for ‘Best Surround Sound Album’ from the 57th Grammy awards in 2015. The award “goes to the engineer, mastering engineer (if any) and producer”.

I appreciate the fact they’re giving us a long break to discuss the Production categories lol.
