Honey, they definitely need to bring back Best Urban/Alternative Performance.  That category used to be lit!

I hope Toni’s Do It gets a nomination for Traditional R&B

I wonder where would they place CeeLo Green’s Fuck You these days? Pop solo?
That’s why Best Urban/Alternative shouldn’t have been eliminated.

Maybe Janelle Monae would be a Grammy winner already if that category wasn’t eliminated.

The title “Urban” is still controversial, so would “Progressive R&B Performance” be the new title?

Really late to the category discussion, but Best Urban/Alternative used to exist. They should just bring it back, add an Urban/Alternative album category, and keep Traditional, R&B Performance, etc. I’m always here for more categories and more recognition.

Best Progressive R&B Album would be the “Urban/alternative album” you’re speaking of.

Who am I? You'll find out soon. Ciao, for now!

    I would assume so.

Oh so you sing?? So this is personal for you. I get it.

I do, and it is. But even if it wasn’t personal for me, some of us believe in honoring our black R&B legends who can sing. It’s one of the few categories I look forward to predicting every year.

I’m looking at the winners in Traditional R&B, and a lot of the winners have Grammys in other R&B categories (and genres). I think you’re overstating that point just a tad.

They have won Grammys in other categories because Traditional R&B either didn’t exist then or their songs didn’t meet the criteria to get nominated nominated there. This category is a reason some of them have even been nominated or have multiple deserved nominations. Don’t discard it just because you dislike traditional R&B music.

This category is a reason some of them have even been nominated or have multiple deserved nominations. Don’t discard it just because you dislike traditional R&B music.

Lizzo won Urban Contemporary Album and Pop Solo Performance.

    PJ Morton won R&B Song.

Childish Gambino won ROTY, SOTY, Rap/Sung and Music Video.

Lalah Hathaway won R&B Performance and R&B Album.

    Robert Glasper won R&B Album.

Gary Clark, Jr. won Rock Song, Rock Performance and Contemporary Blues Album.

Beyoncé won over 20 Grammys in different categories and fields.

The list goes on and on. Traditional R&B Performance existed when these artists won those Grammys.

This category is more of a name-check for their favorites than anything else. Like I said, you’re exaggerating that point a bit, and I have nothing against Traditional R&B Music. I think the category has become redundant, and I prefer if they eliminate it and create Best R&B Solo Performance and Best R&B Duo/Group Performance instead.

I honestly preferred Urban Contemporary but I guess so.

Best Progressive R&B Album would be the “Urban/alternative album” you’re speaking of.

    what I want to see:

    Progressive R&B/Alternative Performance
    Progressive R&B/Alternative Album
    Progressive R&B Album
    Traditional R&B Performance
    R&B Performance
    R&B Song

basically, idk why people would want to get rid of categories when we have more commercial artists doing a wider variety of music than ever. especially when the R&B categories are the unofficial home of all black artists. I want more recognition, not less.

I’m content with the categories for the most part, and I don’t see the need for an Urban/Alternative/Progressive R&B Performance category.

I would like the R&B field to be more like this:

    Best R&B Solo Performance
    Best R&B Duo/Group Performance
    Best R&B Song
    Best [Traditional] R&B Album
    Best Progressive R&B Album

    That’s five distinct categories there.

“Roxanne”, “Stunnin'”, and Good Thing are definitely not R&B.
