Why do y’all think pop doesn’t have a songwriting category (aka Best Pop Song)? I can think of 3 reasons: 1) The Academy doesn’t think pop has enough substance, 2) There’s already 4 categories in pop, 3) Popular pop songs have an advantage and could get into SOTY sorta easily anyhow
I’ve always ruled this out as an omission. Take for example when they made American Roots Song, there was no matching performance category. And same with now Global Music performance, there’s currently no song category to match.
The number of categories in the field doesn’t matter. R&B had five. American Roots has a whopping eight. So, the number shouldn’t be. Ideally, this is what the Pop field should look like when compared to other categories:
Best Pop Performance (No other field other than country has performance split into solo and duo/group)
Best Traditional Pop Performance (Similar to Best Traditional R&B)
Best Pop Song
Best Pop Album
Best Traditional Pop Album
I hope someday they fix this. And that they also merge Country Solo and Group into one Country Performance to level out the playing field because to me it is not a good look having solo and duo compete in the same category in other fields.October 6, 2021 at 3:30 am #1204504869
I feel like Lil Nas & Doja still won’t get Pop Vocal Noms since of the emergence of Olivia and Billie’s relevancy. Additionally, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Justin Bieber have all in the past 2 years gotten full pop nominations (vocal album, solo, duo/group), so I mean they sound good for a nomination.
however, Nas was nominated in the AOTY so he has support and won Pop Duo/Group, so I mean…
Yeah, I think Nas will get into AOTY but miss out on Pop Vocal Album.October 6, 2021 at 7:06 am #1204505013
Yahoo gave their predictions for the General Field and I must say their predictions are a bit more reasonable than HDD and Billboard. They only gave 6 acts per category though not 8.October 6, 2021 at 7:14 am #1204505019
There’s a new issue of the Billboard magazine on Sunday so we should be getting a lot of FYCs then

Taylor Swift, “Evermore”: The companion effort to the 2021 album of the year winner (“Folklore”) is, arguably, the more potent of the pair with its adventuresome folk-pop and vivid storytelling. Swift could break her own record – set earlier this year – by winning the category a fourth time.
