I’m wondering if he can make it into AOTY regardless of rap placement. Between the collaborators and vice grip he has on a certain audience, it seems kinda inevitable? Is there any chance another rap album gets more votes than him?
August 29, 2021 at 8:00 am #1204422517DONDA will go Rap Album. This isn’t a Christian Album.
He should submit Jail to Melodic Rap Performance for sure. Everything else up in the air.
August 29, 2021 at 8:05 am #1204422525Donda has now been released.
Listening to it there is very little, if any cursing. Which I feel supports my guess this won’t be submitted in the Rap categories but in Contemporary Christian. The album’s themes are still very much centered around God/Devil/Temptation/Resurrection/Faith and Redemption.
There’s no cursing because Kanye made a vow that he won’t be cursing anymore in his music. But from a production standpoint this still flows and function as a Rap Album. If he competes anywhere else it would be category fraud IMO.
August 29, 2021 at 9:11 am #1204422609Honestly Donda is not AOTY worthy. Its good but not GREAT, compared to the best work in his own discography and the best Hip Hop albums released this year so far.
Both Nas and J.Cole’s albums are superior. They should honestly be the front runners to represent Hip Hop in the General Field (throw Tyler in there too)
August 29, 2021 at 9:21 am #1204422628With that said:
Jesus Lord should definitely be Kanye’s submission for Rap Performance. Him and Jay Electronica really fucking devoured.
That song is fucking brilliant.
I also really love OK OK original and pt2. But he’s gonna submit Jail somewhere too I bet. Maybe Melodic Rap.
Honestly I’m gonna say this is a lock for Best Rap Album and is a threat to win with or without an AOTY nod.

Rap category feels so packed this year. Kid Cudi & Big Sean’s albums could’ve got in if the competition wasn’t so tough, they had good projects.

Coming off 3 GRAMMYs & a few hit collaborations, won’t be enough when the race is becoming tighter. If Kendrick drops, it’s game over.
August 29, 2021 at 2:54 pm #1204423243Hurricane needs to be nominated for Melodic. Abel’s verses were GOAT level.
August 29, 2021 at 3:16 pm #1204423281Rap Performance: Jesus Lord
Rap Song: Jesus Lord, Hurricane
Melodic Rap: Hurricane
Gospel Performance/Song: No Child Left Behind, 24
Rap Album: DONDAROTY/SOTY: No Child Left Behind

August 29, 2021 at 5:02 pm #1204423391Early Donda reviews not looking too good.
“irrelevance is the direction in which each successive post-Pablo album is veering, like some endless noodling over the same beat into the heavens. This album is flabby dad bod in musical form. Midway through streaming it, a trap jingle for Old Spice came on. It took me 20 seconds to realize this wasn’t one of the 27 tracks off Donda. That’s the type of album we’re talking about here. But if this slog somehow brings you closer to God, more power to you.”
August 29, 2021 at 8:21 pm #1204423925The Kanye trinity is MBDTF, Yeezus and Graduation. My opinion.
Anyways, I now have Donda as the front runner for Best Rap Album. I can’t imagine Tyler beating him in a straight vote especially for an album that was only hot for 1 week. If he’s losing he’s losing for something much more impactful.
