He never really won big at the soul train awards before the last few years.  No Guidance, might have been the exception but there’s a lot more r&b on this new album and very traditional R&B on the second half. He had people like Quincy Jones supporting him when the AMA stuff happened. I would not be shocked if R&B voters rally around him. With all the attention he’s getting right now probably his best shot this year & usually he is competing with Beyoncé in the R&B category. He’s luckier this year

also, isn’t this his first time being nominated with the new voting rules?

Chris Brown has a total of 13 Soul Train Awards (and a bunch of BET Awards), and it never really mattered before, and I don’t see why it would matter now. The only year it probably mattered was in 2011 when he was cleaning up his image and the panel stacked the deck by eliminating Beyoncé from the R&B Album race.

And I think you’re exaggerating how much support he has after that AMA debacle. Final voting takes place on December 14, nearly four weeks after the AMAs. That won’t make or break his chances. Voters were either going to vote for him before the incident or not.

I’ll never understand why they ( Soul Train and BET) keep awarding him when there are better alternatives in R&B. At least Grammy doesn’t fall for that.

I got you stuck in the realness

Those shows are more voted on by radio programmers, promoters, social media influencers, etc. A lot of them not even having a Grammy membership. That’s why you see Chris Brown being favored there vs. a peer-voted award show such as the Grammys.

On the topic of Mary J. Blige, she’s dropping the vinyls for GMG on December 9. Her management has been really on this album push. The tour is doing extremely well and she will be doing a huge Miami festival on NYE. There seems to be a heavy push for her this award season. She’ll win big in the R&B field.

When you understand that the community and BET prefer to support people like chris brown instead of lil nas x it will be too late. They just stopped supporting R Kelly because they had no way out in the face of so much rot.

Mary J. Blige is not winning more Grammys than nor tying Beyoncé for total wins that night come February.  Please.  She’s being overestimated here.  3 wins in R&B is just not happening unless they give Beyoncé AOTY.  Quote me on that.

Outbreak moment: I listened for the first time to the songs from Mary J Blige’s new album and I’m shocked by the quality. The song with Anderson Paak is a hymn She will sweep and is at risk of sweeping AOTY

    Let’s all laugh 😭 😭 😭

Girl… Beyoncé won all the most important awards less the songwriting category because she had two songs there. Even that irrelevant song with The Isley Brothers won. She could easily sweep R&B Field.

Also, the human shit Chris Brown could upset in R&B Album. PJ Morton and Robert Glasper won previously but he also won this category with a album which was more rap than r&b. The AMAs buzz will unfortunately help him.

Best R&B Performance – Virgo’s Groove (or Hurt Me So Good)
Best Traditional R&B Performance – Good Morning Gorgeous (or Plastic Off The Sofa)
Best R&B Song – Cuff It (or Hrs & Hrs)
Best R&B Album – Good Morning Gorgeous (or Breezy)
Best Progressive R&B Album – Gemini Rights (locked)

What Soul Train Awards proved is that Mary J. Blige has NOT the support you all thought she had. She’s not steeling any votes from Beyoncé in GF. She is a pure filler and probably got in because of the alphabetical privilege.

Get real!  That so-called American Music Awards buzz will NOT help Chris Brown.  It will be completely forgotten about by Wednesday.  He only won Best R&B Album in 2012 due to no Best Contemporary R&B Album category and being up against flops.

Y’all are overestimating Chris Brown too much. They’ll go for Robert Glasper, PJ Morton & Mary J Blige before him. MJB could very well steal votes from Beyoncé in AOTY. Beyoncé already has Kendrick in the mix too, She needs every possible vote to win. I don’t see Lizzo as a BIG threat but she’ll take a few votes here & there.

As I stated above, some R&B voters could feel to need to rally behind MJB since she has a full pledge R&B album to vote for (if they don’t want to vote for Beyoncé in AOTY) every voter has their reasoning.

R&B Field has thrown major curveballs in the past. I could see Beyoncé sweeping if she didn’t have any competition. I see R&B Song totally for her but you can make a case for every nominee except Lucky Daye in all of the categories (excluding Trad R&B).

She actually has competition in every corner of the R&B field. I just don’t see R&B voters missing the chance to award MJB one last time (especially since Silk Sonic is not in the mix). She has major support in R&B because she got every category just like Beyoncé. I’d say the support is there because she got in with that song with Paak (I don’t think anyone predicted that). I wouldn’t ignore her GF noms completely. Either way MJB NOT being in AOTY would’ve contributed to Beyoncé chances for a AOTY win.

3 wins for MJB in R&B is totally possible. The only category I see locked is Progressive R&B with Steve & R&B Album with MJB. I’d say Trad R&B is Mary’s as well.

he’s only won best R&B male 2 times for example the first time was only in 2020. And has won 8 out of his 13 total soul train awards since 2019. I think you’re underestimating how much the new voting rules might work in his favor, this is his least successful album to his standards and got a nomination. I think the AMAs will make a difference but that’s my opinion and it won’t be an upset really if Mary wins in other R&B categories and the awards are spread out like last year with beyonce also winning.

Beyoncé hasn’t swept the R&B field since I Am… Sasha Fierce, despite always winning big at the Soul Train Awards. This year will be no different because R&B has become less commercial since then. I don’t know why I brought the Soul Train correlation here because now people here are running with it and will end up hurt when the Grammy results are different. The only true correlation between the two is how majority of the winners in AOTY at ST win their respective genre categories and end up in AOTY at the Grammys. Even that was disproven when Summer Walker faltered there.

Not even entertaining the Chris Brown stuff anymore because I don’t see it for him. If his support was truly there, he would have easily gotten at least an R&B Performance nod.

Fun Fact: Mary J extends her record as the act with the most nominations in “Best R&B Album” . She was previously nominated for “My Life”, “Share My World”, “Mary”, “No More Drama”, “The Breakthrough” and recently “Good Morning Gorgeous”.

Unpopular Opinion: She should’ve won in 1996 but TLC’s win was deserved & understandable. CrazySexyCool was a smash.

Lol coincidently TLC & Mary J would bump heads again at the 2000 Grammys where TLC won for Fanmail

Mary (the album) >>>> Fanmail, but I understand why they won both times.

I’d say Mary was better than FANMAIL too.
No Scrubs swept the whole R&B Field. I’d say in R&B Album that it was Whitney in 2nd & Mary was 3rd
